H2O,
Make sure you check around to find the best price you can get on a rebuilt from Porsche before you pop for a used one. Speaking from experience, there can be many gremlins hiding inside used gearboxes.

C4s,
I'm not sure if the ones you buy from Porsche for around $10k are new or rebuilt like the engines are. I should have referred to them as new.
The transmissions are serviceable but all the gears/syncros are pressed on the shafts and you need a very big press to get them off. There are a few places doing it. I had one rebuilt last summer. I think my mechanic sent it to someone in Texas. It worked out fine.
On this topic, I think this is the single worst characteristic of the 996. People want to talk about the RMS but having a tranny that you have to send half way across the country or purchase a new one just to new syncros or whatever is BS. Just my $.02.

Porsche does not sell internal parts for the 6 speed. The mechanics at my dealer have told me the same story about a special press being needed. At their tranining school 6 speed transmission rebuilds are not covered. Would be nice to find a place in the US that can do it.

Tool,
It's my understanding that many G50 parts work in the 996 gearbox. Others can be sourced and even others need to be made. My work was done by a shop in Lake Havasu, AZ. They did a very good job. I'll PM you with more specific contact info. I'm a little hesitant to put it on a public forum even if it is cheap advertising.

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it along to the next guy. This is a company Scouser found but it is in Belgium. http://www.am-tc.be/porsche.shtml
I remember the guy on this board a year or so ago that was out of warranty and had a bad bearing. Dealer was happy to sell a new or rebuilt transmission, but they do not sell the only part he needed, the bearing. He found the company that made the bearing but they would not sell him one because all the bearings were presold to Porsche.
Then there was guy on renntech that had what sounded like a worn syncro. The dealer wanted to charge him $3,000 to tear down the transmission to verify what was wrong. So I asked him, then what will the dealer do. Tell you they cannot get parts and do not rebuild them? He ended up with a rebuilt from Porsche.
I sure would like to see this special press to see why it is different than any other press.

Last year I paid around $4500 + core for a Porsche reman trans for my '99 C4.
It, and the about $600 labour, was covered by my warranty.
If it hadn't been covered by the warranty I would have put the trans in myself and saved the labour...
