Looking at a 1999 911 Help
Hello all!
I amlooking to buy a 1999 porsche 911 with an automatic transmission. The interior is a little rough but mechanicly ok. It has approximately 82K. The reason I am writiong is because I have owned high milage p-cars before (an 83 911SC, 88 944) With these cars I have had no real issues. I have heard the 99-on have not been the most reliable, So I am alittle worried. Please any long term drivers/owners of this car I really welcome your comments and advice. I am also looking at a 99 boxter which is a little more cleaner with less mileage, but like to hear from 996 owners before I choose. the 996 is being offered at 27,900. Thanks I can also be e-mailed at Servite888@msn.com.
Thanks,
John

John: If you can do most of the maintenance yourself, this could be a decent buy. Don't let the $27K price fool you. This was once a $80K car and replacement parts will be extraordinarily high. I have two friends who own high mileage 993s and they both love their cars, but they do virtually 100% of the maintenance themselves and they get Porsche parts at near wholesale prices.
If you don't intend to do the maintenance yourself, the $27K 996 ccould be the most expensive car you have ever owned. Check the link started by bobporsche996 for one example of a low priced 996 horror story.

fast1 is 100 % correct. I was looking at high mileage 996 as I can do most of the repairs myself but the difference to lower mileage cars is not that much imo. The 996 was build in 98 and 99 and most lower priced cars where build in 98. You can get a "real" 99/996 with much lower mileage than the one you are looking at for around 35 K.
