The CHP may let you get away with having a non-amber bulb and a clear sidemarker but the red sidemarker is a ticket waiting to happen.

It creates a nice contrast with the color of your car.

it's not as easy as that... if the cop wants to be a dick about it... lots of cops can be when they see someone in their dream car that they could never afford.. or if they have had a really bad day, etc... impersonation of a cop is a felony and they'll arrest you and throw you in the slammer.. if it's on a friday, you won't get out until monday.. until you have a chance to talk to the judge.. and explain yourself.. or make up whatever bs you plan to...

having been a southern californian myself, spending the weekend in the los angeles jail surrounded by gang memberss prolly isn't the way i'd choose to spend my weekend if you catch my drift...

basically, if you get caught going fast or not signaling, etc.., or **** of a cop, for any reason, it gives him an actual reason to arrest you and throw you in jail.. he can't do that normally just for infraction based moving offenses..

not to mention.. having a red sidemarker is probably 100 times more of a cop magnet than having a red car... is that what you really want? imagine a cop at night driving on the other side of the freeway.. seeing all the cars.. and then he sees one with a bright shining red beacon on it... it basically says, pull me over... i give you 3 days max, before you get pulled over in it..

chances are, you will simply get pulled over and given a speech.. a whippin or some lashings <g> told to take it off and let go.. BUT.. it all depends if you run into a cop on a bad day, or one that gets a power trip off bringing people with money to jail for stupid reasons... imho take it off.. it's simply not worth it.. regardless if you like how it looks or not...

I would DEFINATELY not recommend this if you have lithotronics (which it looks like you do) which appear blue or aftermarket blue bulbs.. BLUE + RED = very very bad...

Here are the sections of the California Vehicle Code that pertain to amber markers:

(1) At least one amber clearance lamp on each side mounted on a
forward-facing portion of the vehicle and visible from the front and
at least one red clearance lamp on each side mounted on a
rearward-facing portion of the vehicle and visible from the rear.

(2) At least one amber side-marker lamp on each side near the
front and at least one red side-marker lamp on each side near the
rear.

25102. In addition to the lamps otherwise permitted by this
chapter, any motor vehicle may be equipped with lamps on the sides
thereof, visible from the side of the vehicle but not from the front
or rear thereof, which lamps, together with mountings or receptacles,
shall be set into depressions or recesses in the body of the vehicle
and shall not protrude beyond or outside the body of the vehicle.
The light source in each of the lamps shall not exceed two
candlepower and shall emit diffused light of any color, except that
the color red is permitted only on authorized emergency vehicles.

Stick with the amber bulb. It is not worth it. You might get away with having a white bulb on the sidemarker but I know people who have been ticketed for that too. For once I agree with Bob -- if the cop really wants to enforce the code, you can be thrown in jail.

Hey damant,

I didn't mean any offense. I just wanted to point out that red lights -- side markers or otherwise -- are a bad idea.

Anyway, here's a like to clear (not smoked) side markers. http://www.eagleday.com/liandle1.html

Cheers,

Personally I use the clear and then a green LED bulb to match the car. Amber LED is there also but only works with the turn signals, green off, amber on.

Hey Programmatore, no biggy, it'zzzz alll goood.
now I think about it, you and bob are right.
btw, i have those "clear" side markers (eom porsche) but they are a bit grayish....I'm just too picky.
( the clear ones on the 997 are true clear for example... may be I should get an 997 huh...to match the clear side markers)

LED huh ? ... I will do some research then..
