I can't believe this!
I took my '01 C2 to the dealer on Tuesday evening because I was smelling the odor of burning oil after I drove the car. However, there wasn't any evidence of oil dripping on the garage floor. I figured that something was just leaking out of my REMANUFACTURED REPLACEMENT motor onto the headers (12 months and 9800 miles since replacement). Well, I was right on that respect as the oil leak was at the #2 spark plug oil return tube. In making the repair, the service tech even did an oil change at no charge.
Now here's the kicker:
At the bottom of the rapair invoice is the following:
"Cust states check for oil leak"
"REAR CRANK SEAL LEAKING"
"R&R transmission (manual) - clutch and flywheel to replace rear crank seal"
"Measure crankshaft to case clearance - is less than 0.3mm"
"Seal bolt threads at engine case and intermediate shaft flange"
However, there is no mention of any part numbers on the invoice. Maybe it was only a leak at the bolt threads and intermediate shaft flange.
Since I picked my car up after the service tech and the service mananager left for the day, I have not talked to them yet. I will talk to the service tech tomorrow and get more details.
The good news is that the car is still under warranty so ther was no cost to me. Am I LUCKY or what?
If it turns out the the RMS was leaking, am I the first with an RMS failure on a remanufactured engine?

Confirmed
Well, I did confirm today with the service tech that the back of the engine was wet with oil. Not only did he replace the RMS but he also sealed up several bolts with Loctite.
Now, I am unsure what to do. My lease lasts until August of '07 and the warranty runs out in April of this year. I will talk to the finance manager at my local dealership on Wednesday morning to see what warranty company they recommend, what is covered, and what it costs. I will then evaluate the warranty cost and coverage against the risk of major failures and the associated repair costs.
I seem to recall several posts where the cost of repairing a leaking RMS out of warranty is about $800, is that correct?

Randy - you will probably want to move out of that car.

Eric,
Thanks for the advice. I am seriously considering doing just that. The major downside is that it will cost me about $2K to get out of the lease early. So, if I can get the extended warranty for about $2K, it may make sense to keep the car until the lease ends. Besides that, I just love the car. Also, if I do get rid of it, I most likely will not be getting another Porsche because of the reliability problems with the 986/987/996/997 engine design (I would seriously consider a Mercedes SLK 350 or a new Corvette Z06 (I can't believe I said that!)).
By the way, your bumper plugs are a great product.
