1. How much play should one have on the gear box or shift linkage? I seem to have alot of play in neutral(if that makes sense) and more then I think I should when it is in gear.
2. Does it matter where neutral is set or is it just a preference thing?
Stock and you suspect that there is play? That's interesting. Have you compared to another stock 2002 and up 996 to make certain? Surely your car is under warranty still if there are any problems and if in fact there are, you may want to have them sorted out prior to installing the short shifter.
I would think less play = tighter and more precise shifts right?
I remember reading a post somewhere about someone being super meticulist and had his shift adjusted bc it was 1mm off center or something like that..
Thats the thing.. I haven't driven anyone elses 996 and dont know if mine is normal or not.. To me, it's a considerable amount of play even when in gear. The shift just seems loose..Is this something that I can adjust or tighten up myself while i'm in there?
I don't believe that the factory parts are adjustable for amount of play or the position of neutral. The B&M should fix things up for you if what you have is in fact, normal for a 996.
Couldn't agree more. Once it goes in you will see what you have. Consider the evo shift link too if you still wonder about loose linkage and breaking. Not mandatory, but a nice add.
