Survey on your 996
I am just curious to determine the mileage on your 996 and if you or prior owners have had any minor , major or no mechanical failures. Minor failures include bulbs burning, sensor errors, rattling etc.......while major flaws include RMS failures, tranny, engine components and son on. For those of you who drive in countries with KM's the conversion rate is 1 Km = .6214 Miles.
Make sure you answer both questions , the mileage of your vehicle and the failures whether they are minor, major, minor and major or none.

Interesting that the majority of the respondents have vehicles between 10 and 50000 miles representing 65% of the total ownership. Low mileage useage, I would think?
54% have had no significant repair issues to report , while 25% had minor issues and 16% of all respondents had major issues.
Keep this poll up of you can..................interesting to see the final results.
Cheers and safe driving.

- Engine replacement at about 30K RMS failure
- Replaced clutch when RMS was done, early clutch wear.
- Alternator "Crapped Out" on me (Christmas Day 2002) on the way home in the rain at 11pm at night.
- Replaced MAF's (x2)- CEL Warning
- Oxygen Sensors (x2)- CEL Warning
- Replaced coolant overflow tank (failure)
- Lost one Litronic torch
- And those pesky leather sport seats keep coming apart at the seam where it is tucked around on the side...looks tacky
Most everything repaired under warrenty.

2001 996 C2, 33.8K miles
Leased used from Momentum Porsche @ 17.7K miles (5/03)
In service date 4/15/01
I think that these (especially #1) qualify as major repairs and failures
1. RMS failure and subsequent engine replacement @ 24K miles (12/03)
2. Ignition switch failure
3. Coolant tank failure
4. Rear aerokit spoiler paint blistering (factory installed option) (12/04)
5. Going in tomorrow for oil leak check (smell of burning oil after driving)
Although I have had these problems, I still would not consider getting rid of the car until the lease is up.

Three Wheelin'
53,000 Miles my Mass Air Flow Sensor went bad--Expensive part--$500, although labor was only a half unit [or one unit max]. Also, the brakes went out at 48,000 miles [pads and rotors replaced to the tune of $1200], but I was the third owner so I really can't tell if that was my fault or previous drivers...So really very few problems with the car during my 1.5 year tenure with it [and truthfully my e46 323Ci Brakes went out at 45,000 Miles and cost me $850, so it's probably not unusual brake life]...

0-5 8%
5-10 15%
10-30 39%
30-50 28%
50-70 6%
over 70 4%
While the on the same poll, 62 members responded for failures ...........I guess some folks forgot to answer both questions since the responses should be at 74.
Anyway:
Minor problems 35%
Major 13%
Major and Minor 10%
None 42%
So in a nutshell a 77% of the vehicles have between 10 to over 70k miles and 58% reports minor and major failures to their vehicles while the balance report no failures that are significant.
Hope this helps.........Very interesting. Would love to see how this survey would come out with the 997, 993 and turbo models.
Cheers

Or to put it in a different prespective. If you were to purchase a Pcar 996 today, the chances of you having some kind of mechanical failure, whether it be minor or major is 58% before the car reaches 50000 miles.

Statistically this is a very skewed result when you are comparing survey results to total production numbers, especially on a forum where most people visit when they have "issues". No matter how many times a poll is performed it will always be a negative result. It's like asking how many virgins are working in a brothel sorry but I think it is mad to make any worth while conclusions from 100 or so posts when tens of thousands of cars are on the road. We know the car is not perfect but which is? They all have their problems be it minor or major and regardless of their issues human nature says we complain. Thats my ranting done for the year
