My Alpine is different, and way more expensive than you might want to spend. Here's what I have:
Alpine IVA-D300 (mobile multimedia station controller)
Alpine NVE-N852A (DVD Nav. sysyem)
Sirius-ALP1 (Sirius sat. radio)

This system allows me to play dvd movies, cd, sat. radio, nav., am/fm, and cellphone. Yes, dvd movies...my son plays travel baseball, and we do take the 996 to away tournaments....

If you'd like me to post a photo..just say the word.

Happy New Year Everybody!!

Hey Robyn...what Alpine screen was that? IVA's and other flip screen headunits are not the ideal solution for install.

Do you remember the screen model number?

Msrc2:

Yes, please educate me! I looking for the same type of set up you've got-- NAV plus the ability to allow my kids to watch their DVD movies. Can you either post or PM me with all of the dirty details (price for units, price for install, and any ideas where to purchase (websites, etc.)) Thanks!

I have the Garmin 2610 and have been happy with it. It's a portable, plug-in unit that you can move from car-to-car, but it's obviously nowhere near as slick as the in-dash models. Check the OT forum as someone just posted a question regarding GPS systems.

The Tom Tom Go Koenig recommended looks very functional for the price (I looked at their website).

For those of you using portable systems, where do you mount it? Just in the middle of the car on the windsheild? Or, did you find a better spot?

I like the idea of being able to update the system and take it with me to other cars.

The Alpine system is very clean looking, but I am guessing very expensive once I get all the pieces I would need. I'm also not a big fan of pop-out screens.

I have the Pioneer AVIC N1 in my car. The GPS work ok. Some of the routes aren't as short as normal. Like I would take a totally different route than the one provided to get back to my house. But it also plays DVD's and MP3's.

I'm looking at a Kenwood unit that has a fixed screen and plays dvds. But my local car guy wants a total of about $2800 for the whole job (screen, radio, installation). Not sure whether this ia a fair price, but, in any case, it's more than I wanted to spend.

Faszcinated,

The Tom Tom comes with a car windshield mount. You can get spares and leave one in each car you use. I put mine in the middle of the windscreen, bottom resting on the dash, tilted towards the driver. It had not fallen off yet!

You can select day or night modes to suit the lighting conditions.

I just got a 512Mb SD card so I can have every postcode in the country loaded in (downloaded from the Net) as well as more maps. (and all the static speed camera locations)

I also have a Garmin Quest. Great product. I picked it because I wanted to move it from car to car, and I wanted to have it when I travel. I can download most of Europe in it and carry it with me when I'm walking the city...

Roy

ps. It also has a windshield mount that comes with it. It has an option bike and motorcycle mount as well.

Wow! nice install - i heard that its *impossible* to swap to an aftmarket head unit on 911s - seems that was BS.

I'm buying a TT and want to do exactlty what Ca996 and robyn have done.
I was thinking re: the eclipse touchscreen dvd/cd/mp3 navunit. I presently have a alpine tme760 screen w/ nav, but wanted to gou touchscreen - does alpine/pioneer/kenwood have atouchscreen unit?

robyn - did you swap out the nav for pcm? or were you able to move the HVAC pod.

How much glare are you guys getting in those screen positions?
