Default TIPTRONIC upgrades?

My 99 996 TIP does not allow steering wheel gear activated changes when in automatic mode, but I read that the later TIP's allow this function post 01. Logically it must be software driven can the software be upgraded?

I have heard this is possible with BMW's transmissions where you can upgrade the chip in similar fashion to the engine managment system, of course this only holds gears in the BM's giving a sportier feel?

Has anyone done this or do dealers offer it?

Cheers

My 2000 996 does allow to shift up or down when in auto mode, but shifts back quickly unless you really get on it. I haven't done anything to it and i don't believe the original owner did either. I have all of his records since new. I thought it was supposed to. I also thought if PSM was turned off and in manual mode that the tip wouldn't shift on its' own, but mine does, just before redline.

In Auto mine drives just like an auto of course with the pedal tap/tap feature, it starts in 2nd and unless given some stick at take off stays in 2nd. In manual it starts in 2nd and I must shift to 1st in order to get on as you say, then it will hang onto a gear and only upshift at red line or close to.

Cheers

There is company called Rennsport Systems (porsche@rennsportsystems.com) who can make the modification to your tiptronic transmission. Unfortunately I got the following answer from them: " Due to the amount of work that the Tip ECU requires, at this time I'm only doing those when the engine ECU is done" The modification to your software supposed to make your shift faster.

I know this is an old thread. Has anyone upgraded their tiptronic to allow shifting while in auto mode? MY 99 does not allow this, but my Cayenne does and I understand that later 996s allow this too.

My old 2000 allowed manual shifting with the steering wheel buttons when in auto mode.

I'm surprised to hear that my2000 tips had this feature. Definately not the case on my 99 tip.

the only major change I'm aware of is in 02, when they changed over to beefier tiptronic S (from the turbo), I thought that in all the older cars you could use the steering controls in auto mode but that it would revert to auto in 8seconds

I drove a friend's 993 (I believe 96) and it allowed manual shift from wheel while in automatic.
