Default Screen or Dash Rattles

Hi there,

I'm new to Porsche having just bought a delightful 1999 - 996 TIP C2 Coup'e in Ocean Blue, what have I been missing, these are sensational motor cars and far more practical than one would imagine. It's my day to day transport and I take the kids to school, what a buz they get "checking the engine each morning" so they tell the others at school when they lift the bonnet to get out the school bags!

So far no problems, but I have an annoying rattle, being from previous convertibles I'm used to scuttle shake but as far as I can see it's either the dash assembly that rattles or the windscreen, I say the latter as Porsche suggested that might be the cause.

My question is has anyone had this experience and will replacing the screen, and resealing it overcome the rattle?

I'll no doubt have many more questions as I learn about the marque.

Cheers

My car did the same thing. It drove me crazy...I went to windshield places here in Portland that quoted me $1100.00 to replace the windscreen. Sunset Porsche wanted 300.00-450.00 to do the fix. I did some research on the boards and found that the rattle is coming from the windshield area and that Porsche issued a technical bulletin number 6420 for the repair. Which, BTW, Sunset Service said didn't exist and had no knowledge of.

It took me 15 minutes to make the correction and about 15.00 for the rubber cord that is needed...The only tool you'll need is a small teflon spatula from Crate and Barrel that costs about $2.00 and its handy in the kitchen as well

If you send my your fax number privately I'll send you a copy of this bulletin which is a total breeze to do and I can give you some tips along the way...You'll be amazed how easy it is to do.

Jim

No...I'm not in Australia but I used to live in Sydney (Potts Point) for a while...still have some real good friends there now and visit once in a while.

I do have the technical bulletin in PDF. If you give me your email address I will be happy to email that to you if you would like.

I'm a bit reluctant to post it up on the board...for obvious reasons...

Let me know...

Thx...

Jim

ps...

Is Resches Dinner Ale still around? What about Violet Crumbles?

I have a 2002 cab that has been driving me nuts with squeaks and rattles in the top. I have had the car worked by both local Porsche dealers at total of 7 times totaling 29 out of service days and the damn thing still sounds like a 20 year old Chevy Vega. I am ready to drop the car at their door and let em' have it back. This is after a new engine when the RMS bug hit me. They sure don't make them like they used to.

Interesting I had a look at my car last night and the rear screen has already been done with the small foam insert, but not the front, I might try some flyscreen rubber, it's similar is size and hollow and should perfrom the same job using just one insert, I'll advise how it goes.

I guess it should not be too tight so as to restrict expansion.

Cheers

Well I did it.
Inserted a 2 off 6mm foam tubes on the drivers side and as the gap on the passengers side was wider I used a hollow rubber, the result was immediate, significantly less vibration and rattle, did it on hot day so as to limit expansion risks. Easy, and the rattles have gone, I can now enjoy the exhaust note!

Many thanks for your help and advise.

I haven't had the issue, but just wondered why there would be an obvious reason to not post a TSB on the forum. I'm not criticizing, I just don't understand the implications i suppose. I have posted procedures in the past with no ill effect.

Default Dash Rattle

Jim:
I'd love a copy of the fix or TSB 6420. I too have a rattle somewhere in the driver's side dash that I just can't figure out where it's coming from.
Thanks,
Fred

Got the bulletin, however it doesn't seem to address my issues. I am hearing loud squeaking from the piece of the dash that covers the speedo gauges, right in front of the steering wheel (not sure what its called.) I have the full leather pkg, and it seems as if the whole piece is moving ever so slightly whenever I hit a bump or something. Its quite annoying and has grown louder (I think) lately. Any ideas for fixes??
