have you ever paid for a repair on a 996? $1800 is cheap insurance if you drive 30-40k a year and a blown engine or trans will set you back $5-8k.

i guess it's matter of perspective...if the car will be a garage queen and see less than 1k miles a month, then you roll-the-dice i suppose.

the fact is, once your out of warranty, porsche really could care less about you or your car in terms of taking care of you... from dealing with many many different dealers through my engine replacement ordeals, I discovered the same treatment from all of them being out of warranty... they all could care less, and tried to convince me to buy a new or one of their certified pre-owned cars if I had warranty concerns on mine...

My dealer in certified the car for me and I got the extended warranty from Porsche for $1595 plus the inspection (approx $200). In the first 6 months I used it three times.

What did the dealer get? My 997 order one month after I sold my cab.

According to your answers I should try to get a car with an extended warranty. But only CPO will carry an additional 2 year warranty that does cover RMS.

Therefore, if I buy a 2002 996 from a private sale I can only get a third party (not PNA) warranty that does not cover RMS and does NOT make the dealer care about me or my car. But if I buy a CPO car I will get the 2 extra years of coverage with the RMS covered by the dealer and then I could purchase additional extended warranty by him.

I guess I could take the asking price of the privately owned 2002 subtract $8000 to cover the cost of a new engine and then buy it???

What would be the average private sale price (your personal experience opinion is kindly requested, please don’t quote KBB, NADA or Edmunds) of a 2002 996 with 12000 miles (no PSM, but with comfort package and adv tech package)?

Just to be clear I took a private party 99 Porsche and had my dealer put a CPO warranty on the car and my subsequent RMS repair was covered. I received all of the normal paperwork that you would get if the dealer sold you the car with the same Porsche warranty.

The big issue will be finding a dealer that will do it for you. Mine was smart enough to see the big picture. They got all the service interval and repair work. When it was time to biuy my new car they got preferential treatment. I have sent several people their way.

Since the difference between private party and dealer used car prices can be significant I would try to make this happen if I were you.

Who drives 30-40k mi a year??? National avg is 12K mi. You must be doing roadtrips every single day. 30k mi/yr=82mi/day. Sucks to be you. If you drive that much, I'd get a daily driver and keep the 996 for wkends -- but then again, that's me.

New engine is about $10K. Minor RMS repair is <$1k. If you have minor leak, I'd just repair it w/ my greenbacks. In 2 yrs of certified warranty, what's the likelihood of doing 2 minor RMS repairs? If you suspect a major RMS leak to warrant an eng replacement, you should just get a new car cuz in 2 yrs you'll be out of warranty again.

Most of you may not know that the repairs done by your dealer under warranty aren't always warranted. It's common practice for dealers to perform work, get paid, when it's really not needed. You think your warranty is paying off but that's not always the case.

Anyhoo, it's your money. I am a wrenchhead so warranty is good but not something I'd pay $1K a year. That's more than what I pay for car full-coverage insurance.

I do. Round trip to work is 120 miles. That's one of the reasons I put my Porsche away each winter. To keep the miles down.

If your engine blows a rod (like my first engine) or causes something internal 50/50 chance vs not doing so.. and your core isn't replacable, expect to spend $15,000 to $17,0000 for a replacement engine in total, not $8k or $10k.. it's a serious expense one must always be prepared for... an extended warranty for $1,000yr imho and the peace of mind in having this is well worth it, instead of playing russian roulette with an out of warrantied car...

...the cost from an authorized porsche dealer for the engine part alone is about $8500 for a used rebuilt... $750 or so in misc gasket replacement parts, seals, etc.., $2000 or so for labor, $1000 for tax, and $2500 for the core cost.. that's what happened on my first engine... no core value... add it all up... about $16,000.. and if the engine blows again? Another $16,000... $1,000 a year is nothing... should be a no brainer with this vehicle... I learned the hard way...

The quote is very good for my 99C2 but before I buy the contract, i would like to know if anyone has used/heard about this company. Thx.
I could not find other companies willing to insure 99 porsche.
