I am looking to purchase a 1999 996 with 40k miles. The car has a short shift kit and aftermarket headers and exhaust.
The shifter is very tight especially going into first. Could this be from the short shift kit or could this mean the tranny has seen better days? Maybe the car has had a lot of track time?
When at stop lights at idle the car seems to vibrate more then others I have driven. Could this be from the upgraded exhaust or again could this mean the car had a tough life?
Any help on these topics would be greatly appreciated!!
1rst gearing with SSK is not that smooth, but on the other hand it shouldn't be that much of a prob. it depends how stiff it is.
transmission probs signs are not only 1rst gearing. check noises as well.
vibration on pre 00 cars is common. later car has no such a prob generally.
if a car had a lot of tracktime cannnot be identified eassily....
depends on the guy who owns the car and how he keeps the condition of paintwork, tyres...etc.
generally speaking though, it is easy to spot the dif between a well driven 40k car from a bad driven.....
my car had at least 50 track days on his back...but if someone tried to identify it from the condition of paintwork or the tyres...it would be impossible.....
Get it inspected by someone who knows Porsches. I purchased my 99 cab about 6 months ago. I found the car on eBay. I had a local dealer check it out before I traveled to pick it up. I have installed the SSK recently and 1st gear is a little harder than the rest, but it is not much different than the original.
If the car does not seem to you as good as the other that you have driven, then I would pass on buying it. If you are patient you will find a good deal.
This is my first Porsche and I like it more now than the first day I got it. Good luck with your search.
I have the Porsche SSK and all the throws require more effort than the stock shifter (I think it's because you're essentially using a shorter lever to make the physical changes of the gears, and that requires more work), particularly when the car is not warmed up. After about ten minutes of driving mine shifts easier, but still with more effiort than stock.............
The shifter would be harder with a short shifter. As far as the idle is a little rough it may be the exhaust system. I don't think there is anything wrong with the engine, but it may just need a bit of tuning or the MAF is going bad. I'd suggest you have the car for an inspection at a dealer if you are really considering buiying this car. IMO if these little things are bothering you find a completely stock car.
