just traded my 96 993 for a 99 996, absolutely love the new car....but....is definitely lacking oomph.
at first thought this was just different torque curves between the 2 cars but the 996 is just not as quick as the 993 it replaced - now I KNOW this is not how it should be and there must be something wrong. This is compounded by some hesitation at WOT after 5500 rpm along with the car alsmost feeling as if it doesn't have any more power after 5000 revs - at this point the car should be accelerating hardest (varioram)
also did some (very rough) drag testing a minute ago and was averaging 8 secs to 60!!!!! - it gets even more noticeable as the speed increases
so what could be wrong? have done a search and is still inconclusive...
MAF meter?? Varioram???
any thoughts??
am going back to the dealer with her tomorrow but always find best to be forearmed with what this could be and how it should be fixed - this forum always seems to help me out there...

that hesitation usually is indicative of the maf after reading the other posts. Try and reset the ecu by removing the battery cable for 20 min then driving it hard somewhere and then see how it is.

sounds like a variocam problem. Like the higher RPM function is not altering cam timing.. Let us know what you find..

on way to dealer now....yep know now its variocam not varioram (thats what they called it on the 993 hence the mix up)...I'm thinking its the variocam solenoid from my tireless research - lets see what they say..

I had a faulty cam sensor which caused exactly what you described. Had it replaced and all was cool after that . The car felt quite flat and lacking the powe it should have had.

was the MAF sensor, they replaced it there and then - apparently they are averaging 2 a week at the moment (is a problem with boxsters too)
mechanic told me the cam solenoid predominantly sticks in the upper revs, so you get lumpy idle rough running but ok after 5k revs, this was the opposite hence why the MAF was checked first, replaced, and now she runs like a rocketship
cheers
