Default CD Changer

If a 996 does not have the 6 CD Changer, how easy is it to install one even though it didn't come from the factory that way? Is the car already pre-wired for this(my BMW was so it was just a matter of buying a changer, securing it and plugging the wires in). Also, which Changer have you guys been buying for it, which ones are compatible?

I used a Pioneer 12pack with the install of my AVIC-N1 on a BOSE setup, no trouble. The overpriced 6pack is a Sony model. You didn't specify your year or model, not sure if yours is pre-wired or not. Any good custom shop can install pretty much anything in these for you, they love working on mine, so easy..

Check Ebay for a factory 6pack or check with the sponsers on the board (ie, Branywine etc..)

If you have an '03+ model year, which uses the MOST fiber optic system, your only choice (short of replacing the entire system) is the Porsche cd changer. The fiber optic harness for the changer also needs to be installed (2 - 3 hours labor total). Once installed, the dealer needs to program the MOST system to recognize the cd changer. Renntech.org has a lot of info on MOST system cd changer install.

Prior to '03 there are a few OEM changers that will work, but you will need to install the wiring harness (not pre-wired).

No US car is prewired. Our local group has been putting them in for years and made a DVD, and recently installed a CDC-4 on a MOST car. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...t=0#entry11183

1999-2002 uses the Porsche CDC-3 or the identical Becker 2660. The 2660 has been discontinued and replaced by the 7860, but the 7860 has a memory issue and it does not fit exactly on the factory mounting bracket. You can still find the 2660 if you look around.

2003/4 can only use the Porsche CDC-4, made by Becker but Becker will not sell it. It comes in a kit with everthing you need except the fiber optics to hook it up the the amp or radio head.

Default Another alternative to consider

If you have a pre-MOST bus car (2002 and earlier), consider getting an iPod and using the AUX-in function of your radio to direct connect it to the radio system. This is probably about the same cost as a CD changer, but instead of being limited to 6 or 12 CDs you can have your entire music collection available to you in the car. The cable to hook up an iPod is available from Becker for about $20.

I have done this with both my 02 C2 and my Audis, and it works great. CD changers are so 20th century.

I recently installed a Porsche CDC-3 stacker in my 02 C4's.

I purchased the unit new from Brandywine Porsche for $399 USD.

It was very easy in that the car was pre wired from the factory (Australian / Euro RHD spec) with the harness and the mounting bracket. All I had to do was mount the stacker in the bracket (six screws), connect the harness and cut out the plastic perforations for the stacker.
