Default Battery drain

Are there any commonly known sources on the 996 that could be draining the battery?

Default Lots of electronics!

I just replaced the battery on my 2000 996 because it would no longer hold a full charge. If I leave it locked for 3 weeks straight without being on the trickle charger it always gets the battery down (it will start, but clearly there is less power there).

Might be time for a new battery, 5 years is a normal replacement time.

Thing is I replaced it (original Porsche part) two weeks ago and have only driven the car twice for short runs since, and this new battery has also gone flat . Production was 2003 week 14 so the dealer replaced it again free of charge.

I have been told by a friend that works as a BMW tech, that even new batteries must be charged prior to installation to work troublefree, since they loose their charge while sitting on the shelf.

New battery (produced late 2003) will go in tomorrow after a topup charge overnight. If this one drains, I guess I will have to bring it in and check for a drain.

Ciao,

Default Check your voltage meter for more than 12

If your alternator is working, your voltage meter should show above 12 volts. If it isn't working, then it will show a flat 12. Then the fun begins. Sounds like this isn't your problem though.

Doesn't everyone have a trickle charger for their 996? Couldn't be without mine, but I live in a small town.

Good luck.

What is the acceptable amperage drain on the battery?

The most common cause of a draining battery is leaving the key in the ingnition. I park mine sometimes for 4, 5, 6 weeks and starts right up. $48 battery from Sam's club. If your voltage gauge is not showing 14 or very close to that, you have a charging problem.
