Default Paint Chip Help/Advice Please!

Hi,

Yesterday I noticed a small 1/4 inch chip about 3 inches below the fuel filler (noticed it while gassing up). The car was dirty and it looked like someone had bumped something into the car because there was a slight smear forward of the chip.

The chip itself looked like only a thin surface layer of Arctic Silver paint had been scraped off - there was a duller silver/grey paint layer intact underneath the disturbed layer.

What are my options, and what is the preferred alternative? What should I NOT do?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance,

Wino

Also, I am in the DC area, so any recommended facility in the DC/VA/MD area would be appreciated.

Once the chip is repaired, how long before I can have the car washed and waxed?

Can a car detailer fix this? Should I take it to Porsche of Arlington?

Thanks again,

wino

I'm interested as I have a similar chip and dent where somone in an SUV hit my driver's side rear fender with a door (hit and run... thanks) and also live in the DC area.

I'd have to believe a Porsche dealership would be the most expensive option?

Try Langka.com

I've not used it, but many Porsche folks have and swear by this product.

Thanks Eric - looks interesting, but I don't want to take any chances.

I thought chips can be buffed out? Or should it be touched up?

I am looking for a pro to take care of this!

Take it to high end detailing shop. If it's not too deep, they can color sand and buff it out.

Langka doesn't work well on arctic silver--it ends up removing the silver flakes, which leaves the repair darker than the original paint.

Actually I have found that Langka doesn't seem to work too well on any metalic painted surface. My zenthth blue 996, my wifes metalic black Alfa and my previous Gunmetal Silver Audi all have/had metalic paint and I found that this was always the case, it leaves the repair in a different shade to the original colour.

I have several chips, one or two are as as bad as you describe here. I think the only real way to deal with them is have them fixed up in the body shop.

The best you could do with the exception of painting the whole panel; Clean out a little with rubbing compound. Get origional paint (just the base coat color) or at least one of those touch up tubes from the dealer. Use small brush and dab a drop at the time of the origional paint in the chip. Dont get any outside the chip. Let each drop dry. Use compound and smooth off every coat. Hopefully you can build the chip up to the paint surface.

Best recommendation after fixing it is to install a 3M clear bra, saves the front bumper to make the install worth it.
