Hey everyone! New 996 owner here looking into some options to play music through my phone and charge as well, without having to replace the head unit. I stumbled across the Rennkit BTR-2 Bluetooth Retrofit Kit as an option, which claims charging abilities, but would like to understand a few things from those who might have installed it already.
Any thoughts on better placement to hide the button shown below?
Does it actually have phone charging capabilities, or is it just the bluetooth? I'm confused as to where the charging cord Rennkit describes would even come from, and don't see it displayed in any photos.
Is there drilling involved? I saw a thread that was concerned about the drill bit supplied in the kit, but didn't see a definitive answer.
Does anyone have experience with any of these questions, and thoughts on whether this or something else would accomplish my goal the best? I've explored some FM transmitters with charging capability, but am concerned about the interference living near a large metro area and audio quality. Happy to hear other suggestions as well!
I've not found a really good FM transmitter. I think the Bluetooth option will take the input previously reserved for the CD player. That's what's keeping me from making the conversion, well that and the sound compression.
This is the FM Transceiver I currently use to power my radar detector and dash cam, as well as charge my phone. It even has 36W fast charging, which is a huge QoL feature not many 12v car accessories have. I wish the Porsche radio went to lower or higher frequencies that saw less use, so when I unplug the thing before I shut the car off I wouldn't hear the local Latino station lol. You can find it on Amazon for $25. Syncwire Bluetooth 5.4 FM Transmitter

I installed and have been using this for a couple of years, I found the seller very responsive to questions.. I removed the ciggy lighter, and bought a round USB port that fitted in the hole perfectly for charging, couldn’t tell you the part number or where I got it, likely Azon..
It does take over the 6 CD changer input but the single CD changer in my head unit still works if I want to be retro. I'm not 100% sure if it charges a phone - I just use a 12V to usb adapter from the cigarette lighter to charge, but there is a USB outlet from the transmitter.
I agree FM transmitters in a big city tend to suffer from interference. Super happy with this unit because I just tuck it behind the center console stuff and you can't tell it's there. I like the stock look of the center console.
