Default .2 PSE on .1?

Wondering if anyone has retrofitted the .2 Porsche Sports exhaust onto the .1 and if it’s possible. I really like the idea of being able to switch it from the dash. I already have a cat delete and don’t want it permanently open but would love to be able to switch it.

I’ve see the car graphics and other system that are a key fob based system but would rather use the empty button on the dash.

I’ll be asking my indie if it’s possible but wanted to reach out to the forum for expertise first.

I’ve seen people mention that the .2 wire harness included the button switch for the PSE behind the dash and I’m not sure if the .2 mufflers use the same hanger locations or would you use the .1 PSE but with a switch controlling ther vacuum ???

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm 99% sure it's possible, but the only "problem" is that the PSE button is matte finish like all .2 dash buttons, not the glossy finish on .1s.

.2 mufflers would fit on .1 no problem. They are identical.

Difference might be in the tip length? Might stick out from the .1 too far as-is.

So the .2 mufflers will cause the tips to stick out farther?

I don't believe that is correct. The tips and the pipe behind them are separate from the mufflers.

i got this off AI.

Porsche 996.1 and 996.2 exhaust tips are different due to changes in the rear bumper design; 996.2 tips sit lower and further back, and 996.1 tips are not a direct fit on a 996.2 bumper without modifications. Mufflers are the same.

I've just done this very job without issue on my 2001 996.1

My car was originally equipped with PSE but I wanted to use the dash button as per the 996.2.

If you want to use the factory dash switch and have it operate exactly as per the 996.2, you'll need to purchase the correct relay which is scandalously expensive, but the only way to do the job properly.

One other thing to consider is that the wire that controls the switch backlight 'dim' signal (green/blue/brown) has to go to a spare relay slot on a jumper bridge within the relay board. All the instructions available on this state to find this in relay port 28, pin 5/2. This IS NOT correct, it is relay port 25, bottom row, third from the left. Having consulted the original factory wiring schematic for a 996.1, this was confirmed to be the case. Maybe the 996.2 has different wiring in this area, but if you're doing this on a 996.1, it is slot 25, not 28.

Here is a copy of the wiring schedule as per the Porsche retrofit dealer technical guide, but please note incorrect relay 28 reference as stated above. The first table is wiring to the relay, the second table is wiring to the switch. If your car is already PSE equipped as mine was, only the wiring to the switch is needed.

Here's the mini-loom I made up to run the switch to the relay and fuse boards. 24" should leave plenty of spare to enable neat and tidy routing.

I didn't like the look of the matte finish switch in the early dash, so I airbrushed my with several light clear coats until I had enough to flat back and polish.

I labelled this picture I took before I reinstalled the carpet trim, in the hope that others find it useful.

Gotcha nicely done! So are you still using the 996.1 PSE mufflers or swapped to the .2?

I replaced mine with the simply gorgeous Top Gear stainless items, however the fitment is the same. The silencers are interchangeable, as are the tips. The only difference is that due to the shape of the rear bumper on the 996.2, the tips protrude a slightly different amount, however the fitment and interchangeability is identical.

Remember to remove the pink and grey wire from the exhaust flap relay holder socket whilst you're in there, as this will disable the automated quiet mode between 30mph and 50mph.

The top gear units do look really nice. Were you able to wire those to the dash or do you use a key fob?

Yes, fully wired to the dash switch, details in my first reply which I've edited to include more information if it helps anyone.

Maybe a dumb question, but does a .1 PSE even exist? I though it had been introduced with the 4S which is a .2.

My late 1998 3.4 had a PSE retrofitted to it with the dash switch and sport tips, everything worked just fine. It had been wired the right way with the relays where they should. The matte switch is easily remedied with a bit of clearcoat on top.

Also, make sure to do the speed cutout delete. It's free, very easy and well worth it.

Yes, definitely exists. But it lacks a physical button to control the valves manually.
