I noticed that my decklid purge fan has not come on at all this year. To test it, I have performed the following:

- With the key in the ignition turned to on (car not running), I unplugged the engine compartment temp sensor. Fan did not come on after waiting 2 minutes.
- Running 12v from the battery via jumper cables, I unplugged the decklid fan connector and put 12v (measured with multimeter) directly to the fan terminals. Fan did not come on.

Time to replace the fan? Anything other thoughts?

I’d never seen mine run in two years of ownership but I recently bought a Durametric and was able to toggle it on/off with that. Now I know the car is able to command it to run. Next step is to confirm the engine temp sensor is working correctly.

I'm not really sure how useful the rear fan actually is. Unless you live somewhere super hot it only comes on at a very high temperature.
I'm pretty sure you could remove it and likely never know the difference!

I've only heard mine run once. After I got back from a drive in the summer and was idling in my driveway for a few minutes.

It gets plenty hot here in DFW during the summer. I dealt with a leaky coolant reservoir last summer and when I saw the temp gauge in my car climbing again this summer, I got nervous more issues were on the way. I've been watching the coolant temp all summer on the AC display and it is often 100-105C while driving in traffic. This made me wonder why my purge fan wouldn't be running while stopped in traffic or at least when I get home and park to vent the engine bay.

Ironically, after the tests I ran the last two days trying to get the fan to run, I got home this afternoon, parked in my garage and the purge fan finally came on. I assume it had to do with me messing with the harness, tapping on the fan housing, manually spinning the blades by hand, etc. Since it was 20 degrees cooler today than it has been and I was returning from a short drive across town.

I was not aware of a switch in the latch. Does this mean the purge fan will not operate with the rear open? Should I repeat the 12v test and this time move the latch so that the car thinks the rear is closed?
