Default 996 Wheel Options

Hi all, my 98 year old dad finally decided he wanted me to take his baby, a 1999 911 Carerra 4. It's both sad and exciting at the same time. It's a beautiful car but I was just curious what my options were on wheels to replace the factory severely curb rashed wheels that are a bit dated and small at 18". I have seen the measurements of various wheels available that are say 1" bigger and wider and then there is the offset that I'm not sure if there is an acceptable range. For instance, there is a set of Carrera V wheels. 19x11 rear 19x8.5 front that are very nice looking on Craigslist.

first of all, am i making a mistake by changing wheel size to say a 19" from 18" or at all? Will the stock wheels have the best ride?

I found a site wheel-size.com that gives the specs as:

Most will agree 19s ruin the handling of these cars and a wider 19” wheel will be a pretty tricky fit on stock suspension, especially without listing the offsets.

There are a good amount of 18” options that change the look and offer a performance benefit. Apex makes some of my favorites and they have several options in tailored plug-and-play sizes for these cars. I also work for Apex, just for full disclosure, and there’s a reason we don’t make a 19” wheel for the 996.

I don’t recommend 19s at all especially on a 4 wheel drive
ride and handling adversely effected

I agree with the two above. 18s are the way and Apex is probably the best forged wheel for the money while still having a nice looking aesthetics as well as performance in the best sizes for our cars.

To be fair, I have 3 full sets of wheels and almost a full set of E88s… all 18s.

OK, well 3 out of 3 say stick with 18's and 2 endorsements for Apex, although 1 is biased . I appreciate the feedback very much! Cheers!

While they’re not Apex, here are some pics of Oz Alleggerita and TE37.

I disagree on the comments "19" make the car handle bad"......I put 19" on my C4 and it actually handles better! It's a personal preference. 19" fill the wheel well much better without having to lower it. I love mine!

Those wheels are nice too. Are they Porsche or 3rd party and what are the measurements?

I wouldn’t say it’s a personal preference so much as science, but whatev gets you by.

A 19” wheel is almost always going to be heavier than an 18” one unless it’s a VERY high-end fully-forged 19, and running 19” wheels on cars designed around 18s forces you to run tires with substantially less sidewall meat, which is really where you lose your handling and makes the car’s ride crashy and extra sensitive to imperfections in the road in the bad way, not the communicative “I can feel everything the car is doing and control it” way.

Makes sense, thanks. I think based on the feedback I will just get the curb rash repaired on the stock wheels, and get familiar with the car for a while before I change anything. Thank you all for your input.
