Do you buy a car because you want it or to appeal to anyone's taste?
I am enjoying 996 and will probably enjoy 997-998-999 and 1K.

I doubt I will be in your rear view mirror but agree with most comments to enjoy your car. Some of us "air cooled" enthusiasts have an appreciation for all 911 iterations.

I have a 996 coupe and an '87 911 Carrera coupe in my garage. Guess which one I get into every day to head to work?

The air cooled cars are great as toys, but for real world, every day driving where I appreciate power steering and brakes, ABS, smooth shifting, pedals hung from above (like they should be), an A/C system that actually blows cold air, PSM, a decent stereo, and 300 horsepower, the 996 wins by a long, long, long shot.

The '87 is a wonderful car to take on weekend trips, as long as the weather is good. I love it too.

In fact, I love all Porsches. It's the 'purists' among the owners who can't get over themselves and find something important to discuss, that I can't stand. I never understood their unwillingness to accept development (or reality).

PS - I like the 997 better than the 996 if only for the fact that it's the latest, greatest version of the 996.

From a technological/performance aspect, I absolutely agree. The newer cars will offer better performance, fuel economy, ergonomics and creature comforts.

However, at least for me, that does not translate into "liking" the 997 better than the 996 or the 996 better than the 993.

I agree. I'm sure that the 997 is amazing. 911s get better every model, but the 996 is an amazing car, as is the 993. I'm hanging onto my 996 until the Boxster Coupe comes out. If it looks like any of the drawings I've seen, and it they offer a club-sport version, that will be my next Porsche.

I also have noticed some air coolers adoring the 997 over the 996 from the moment the first pictures were published, WHY?, because they have the round lights and the blinkers on the fenders (as it resembles the 993). Can you believe it, "sports car enthusiast" liking a newer model because it has round lights and repositioned blinkers, and you want to take these guys seriously.
911's have constantly improved, i am certain the 997 will be an improvement over 996 as 996 was over 993's and so on. Now go out there and enjoy that most advanced porsche in north america todate, as i am sure you do. (As I assume you started the thread for argument sake, and I don't for a second believe you need the 993's approval to enjoy your car, 'cause if it's true you never would have bought a 996 in the first place)

Default keep it

Do not get rid of a car that you love, as you say you do. You will only end up regretting the loss.

Stay with the original plan and keep it forever!

Like many have said, own the car that YOU enjoy, which is all that matters at the end of the day.

Looks as though K964 touched a nerve (funny I say that as this morning I had a root canal done) with the comment on getting out on a track. I didnt take it as a bad comment, but you obviously did. Dont sweat the small stuff. The track is not for everyone really..

I love the 993, it gets the heart rate up every time I drive it.. Doesnt mean I wouldn't like to have a 996 as well. Wish I had more room and money to do so.

The only approval you need from is you..

I love my 996! It is my fourth Porsche. I had a 1973 914, I loved that one too! I had a 1995 993 cab I loved that one too! The 996 is definitely a much better daily driver! I have never tracked any of my cars and I dont think I have a desire to. I enjoy drving the car the way I do and enjoying it to the fullest! I dont critque others that drive their cars differently, I just dont understand why they critique me?? I'm sure the 997 will grow on me but right now its looks dont impress me as much as the 996 did when it came out... we'll see...

Wink Enjoy the ride...

Interesting thread…..

Although not alienated from the of the imports it makes me wonder if other boards have this same topic come up as frequent as Porsche boards do.

I can’t remember in any dealing within the Rotary community where people were so quick to judge the incompetence of a new generation. Of course there will always be critics (and that is fine) but to bash a vehicle that you cannot afford is simply “wrong”.

I’m not asking for feedback on this but could you tell me how many 911SC, 964, 993, 944, 928, 924, 356 etc. drivers would dump their car at the closest Pick-A-Part location if they won the lotto?

Not all 996 owners were born with a silver spoon (myself included) but I’m not telling you that they aren’t out there……

To each his own, simply put: Just enjoy the ride!!!!!!

The only advice I can offer up is financial advice in this transaction should you choose to go through with it. If you're really looking at getting into a 997, you need to sell the 996 now. Not tomorrow or next week, but right now, because the value is dropping with every day the 997 gets closer to our shores. You don't want the 997 to come out and decide you want one then, because you're going to lose a lot of money between now and then. Good luck with whatever you do.

In my opinion the styling of the 996 is superior to that of the 993, and I'm not thrilled with the round headlights of the 997. So, to each his own. What's most important is to own a car that you like, and if others like it, that's fine. If they don't, to hell with them. Who cares. The 996 would be an awsome car if it weren't for RMS, but its styling is fine in my books.
