My '99 996 emits a very loud whiney sound on cold starts. The whine continues for a couple of minutes, then abruptly stops. It does not happen on warm starts. The culprit is a water pump, located at the very back left of the engine, right by the bumper. My mechanic called it the "smog pump," but didn't know what to do about it except make a pricey replacement.

Maybe you have the same thing going on?

This is normal on that model year. It's the heater for the catalytic converters.

THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE AIR PUMP,USED TO BLOW AIR INTO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS TO AID IN QUICKER HEATUP ON COLD START.THIS GETS THE CATS WORKING SOONER SO LESS EMMISSIONS.

Has it always been like that since you put the Fabs on or just noticed it lately? I have fabspeeds and it did that in the beginning but over time it has lessened but you know what I like the sound at first startup : ). Regards. Mike

I get the whine on cold starts as well and was concerned. Thanks for the clarification. Should I wait till the whine stops before driving?

I like to wait until it kicks off the air pump ala cold idle etc. and then go. I don't like to drive the car when it's that cold, plus with the gear box being as fun as it is when it's cold every second of warm up seems to help. I believe however in the manual that Porsche says to drive the car after you start it. HOWEVER, this is due to the fact that the company is trying to be emissions and environmentally friendly and everyone I know lets their car warm up at least 1/2 way through that idle if not to till it's over-
