Default Towing a 996

What kind of towing capacity should I look for to tow a C2 on an open trailer with an extra set of tires?

In other words, how realistic are the towing capacities you see for these various SUVs? How much does an open trailer weigh?

I'm thinking about the Cayenne S or Touareg V8 (the diesel is too much of a premium over the V8). Can these two vehicles safely and comfortably tow a 996?

Thanks!

Open trailer weights can vary quite a bit, depending on steel (heavier, cheaper, lower resale value) vs aluminum (lighter, more expensive, much higher resale value).

A Cayenne can easily tow a Featherlite open aluminum or Trailex open aluminum (both are around $4500) with a 996, based on tow weight, length and wind loading. I would recommend air suspension on a Cayenne dedicated to towing.

Head over to the Cayenne forum for threads containing details.

What you plan on towing will not weigh that much. Maybe 4,000 lbs at most. Even a 6 cly Dodge minivan could pull that weight across the country and around town all day long. Have to have a Class III hitch and surge brakes. It won't be a problem towing the car, but you better have good trailer brakes to stop it.

So far, I have 132,000 miles on my minivan and tow a 4600 pound boat around all the time. When the van isn't around, I tow itwith a 6 cyl 1988 Olds Ciena. A vehicle with more torque would be better, but you don't have to gop over board in price, unless it doesn't matter to you.

If you get the right trailer with lower tongue weight, you won't need any suspension mods. My tongue weight is more than 300 pounds and has little effect on lowering the back of the vehicle.

Good luck.

I pulled my 996 to Laguna Seca a few weeks ago with no problem. My trailer was custom built to haul my race car, the S had plenty of power to tow trailer and vehicle.
