DIY - Tequipment shift knob disassembly
I assumed that there was a screw under the shift pattern button so I first tried to use a long screwdriver to try and pop it off from the shaft center. No luck there as it was hitting solid steel and not the aluminum cap. Eventually, got impatient and I pried up the bottom end of the trim near the crest and pushing straight up was able to rip the screws from the wood **** allowing me to see how it all goes together, and figure out the right way to take it apart.
The leather is glued onto the **** and the seams on the front and back fit into grooves in the wooden ****. To remove the leather you will need to remove the aluminum trim piece. To remove the aluminum trim piece, you must first remove the shift pattern button.
There are two screws hidden under the shift pattern button that secure the trim to the wooden ****. Unfortunately, the button is glued in place with some pretty strong stuff making it extremely difficult to remove. This can't be done by prying from the top, as you will mess up the trim piece. It must be done by pushing up through an access hole in the trim underneath the shift button.
To remove the button, you'll need to insert a long, stiff, and metal rod that is less than 1/8" in thick and 1/4" wide through the hollow metal shaft of the ****. The top is covered with a metal plate but there are holes on each side. You need to guide your tool up the shaft towards the front of the **** and try to thread the needle in the top plate and the access hole in the aluminum trim. Where the felt is coming up in the picture below.
With the button removed, you can see a semi-circle of light if you look through the shaft. That is the size and shape of the tool you'll need.
A good amount of force should pop the button free from the trim ring and you'll be able to remove the screws holding the trim to the ****. There is also a dab of glue behind the Porsche crest that holds the bottom to the **** that you will need to gently pull/pry it off.
Good luck with your project!
