Default Mystery connector behind blank switch

I pulled the batwing out to install a new stereo on my new-to-me 02 C4S and found that one of the blank switches actually had a spade connector behind it. Seems to be running off of the cigarette lighter wiring so I assume it’s a mod from a previous owner, but I’m confused how it ended up in that state.

Anyone recognize this approach as a common mod, or perhaps recognize it as factory even?

This. My 2002 targa has PSE but did not have a dash switch. However the wiring was already there, behind one of the blank buttons in the horseshoe. All I had to do was get a switch and plug it in.

I think you guys have nailed it. I don’t have a rear wiper and there’s no hole, but the car was listed as having PSE however there is no switch for it anywhere.

Can you confirm that the switch let you turn it off instead of on? (Obviously it can do both, just wondering if installing a switch enabled louder or quieter) I can’t see why they’d have it off in the default state and not provide a button but just want to be sure.

From the 2003 Carrera manual - PSE Operation - and keep in mind - that when on - there are specific times when it automatically goes into off state.

Sports Exhaust System

The sports exhaust system can be switched off or on when the ignition is switched on.
If the rocker switch is not operated, the sports exhaust system will be on when the engine is
started.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the rocker switch may be installed in the centre console or
in the centre tunnel behind the ashtray.

Switching off

I> Press the rocker-switch symbol. Indicator light comes on.

Switching on

I> Press the rocker-switch symbol again. Indicator light goes out.

Light on: PSE is closed at all times
Light off: PSE open except between 30 & 45mph. You can disable this feature by modifying the relay.

It defaults to the open position when starting up.

Also, PSE would only be the black connector. The white one is something else.

Just curious… why would a car have PSE hardware, wiring up to the dash, and no switch to control it?

It’s a bit weird indeed. PSE existed without the switch, but as far as I know it was controlled by a different relay.

The PSE for 996.1 did not have a switch. Only the PSE offering for the 996.2 had the switch.

In both cases, there was a relay and small logic board. The switch connects to that.

I never heard of a 996.1 with PSE that isn't retrofitted? As far as I know PSE became available with the C4S.
And the ones without switch should have a different version of the relay on the logic board. I seem to recall if you want the switch, you have to change the relay to the one for switched PSE.

Yes, that is correct.

reduce costs of the wiring harness. cheaper to make one version and sell the plug in switch as a premium since most buyers would be unaware of the prewiring

It can also be disabled (always open) by capping the vacuum line at the Y connection to the right the rear latch. And the cap stores perfectly in the snuff cone in the ashtray when it does occasionally get hooked up.

No kidding! Maybe that explains why my PSE occasionally loses its mind and sticks in one mode or the other. It's easy to fix so I just live with it up until now.
