I heard that Shelton Porsche in Naples (800-949-6070) sells a headlight alarm kit that they say triggers the factory alarm if someone touches the headlights or the area directly around them. $350 for parts, and they say it's about 2 hours labor to install. I haven't tried it, so can't vouch for it, but I heard they are installing it in most xenon equipped cars.
The latest edition of Excellence has an article about headlight theft on the 996/986 and even the Cayenne.
Apparently, the 996 HID headlights were designed for easy installation during production... which unfortunately makes for easy explantation by thieves. According to the article, some P-car owners have had their lights stolen more than once. Florida has been hit especially hard.
As Poursha has mentioned, alarms are now available with special headlight sensors.
point of an alarm is deterence. Wonder how the theif will know that the headlights are connected to an alarm. My sisters lexus got broken into when the thief smashed the window, opened the door and stole the radar and some other stuff. Alarm went off but it didn't stop em. who really looks nowadays when an alarm goes off anyway. WIth the ease of removing those headlights, a bold theif wouldn't let that stop him.
Here in Europe, we have companies that “tag” the most important parts of the cars.
In every glass surface, headlights and tail lights, a number is engraved that refers to the VIN# of the car.
The font size of the engraved numbers is comparable to the font they used for a VIN.
Both rear side windows get a flashy 1x3” sticker that shows that the vehicle is “tagged”.
The theory is that the car and the parts become less attractive to thieves.
Wouldn't that be an efficient solution for this problem?
That would be a great idea, Gert. It ultimately won't stop them from removing it, but at least, the thieves won't be able to sell the stolen items in open market. There were several headlights being sold right on eBay, with the disclaimer "as-new with a few scratches".
