Default 3.4 Fister cans into a 3.6 engine

Have seen many people putting 3.6 mufflers into a 3.4 but not the other way around. My situation is a bit unique.

I have a 3.6 x51 (40AE) with fabspeed supercups and a 3.4 99 c4 with fisters. The fabspeed SCs sound great at higher rpm’s but the drone is a bit too much for an old timer like me. Given I have a set of fisters in my 3.4 I’m looking to put them into my 3.6 and the SCs into my 3.4.

Can this be done?
Do I have to buy additional hardware I.e mounting brackets?

Many thanks in advance.

I’m no expert, I’m fairly certain they are the same part # so will not be an issue other than sounding great!

The mounting brackets for the 3.4 mufflers are different from the ones for a 3.6 muffler. You have to use the brackets for the 3.4 ufflers. Check the exhaust tips also, they are different as is the opening in the rear bumper cover

Gotcha, the bolt spacing is different from what I can tell. So take the fisters and the bracket out of the 996.1and then mount it on the 3.6 ?

That means I need an additional 3.4 bracket needed to mount the fabspeed supercups in the 3.4?

by brackets we mean these right?

I'm a little confused by this. 996.2 mufflers fit perfectly on my 996.1 car. I can't see why the reverse wouldn't be true. The only difference I'm aware of is the accordion folds on the 996.2 mufflers, which are also found on 996.1 tiptronic cars.

Fit aside, I was under the impression that the .2 mufflers were a bit more free flowing than the .1 mufflers, allowing the .2 extra displacement to breath a bit better.

I just spent a few minutes going through the autoatlanta on line catalog. The headers, muffler engine bracket, support and muffler all go back to the same part numbers for 98-05. It shows different cats for 98-99 but even the 00-05 cross over to fit the early cars. The only difference is the tail pipes. The mk1 is shorter to fit the bumper but an mk2 tail pipe will fit as i have done it (just looks funny witg a mk1 bumper).

Basically any factory part should fit in any factory system between the 3.4 and 3.6.

Thanks for the insights. If I am reading it correctly, fitting the mk2 tail pipes to an mk1 muffler will push the mk2 tail pipes in a bit given it’s shorter. Hence the funny looks with the mk2 bumper? Or the other way around? Really appreciate it again!

Mk1 bumper is tighter to the car so the mk1 tailpipes r shorter.

If u use a mk1 tailpipe with a mk2 bumper u will melt it.

Pics of a mk2 tailpipe with both bumpers (red=mk1 bumper).

ah thanks for sharing the pics. I was planning on using mk2 tail pipes on my mk2 car, just with a mk1 muffler. Which mufflers did you have on the red and blue cars?

Mk1 and 2 mufflers r the same so there will be no change. Just unbolt yours and put the mk1 muffler in. Expect to have to cut off the old clamps and hardware so buy new stuff in advance.

That is the same car with 2 diff bumpers

oh boy! “Cut off” got me there lmao!! Was hoping to do more unbolting/unscrewing and not cutting. I don’t know if a generic exhaust shop will know what to do here. But I am hoping my Indy will know.

final question for now : what hardware should I get in order to mount a 3.4 mufller into a 3.6 ?

I can’t thank you enough! If you’re ever in austin tx lmk, beer/bbq either or both on me mate.

All the hardware is the same. I would get the bands that r on the cat side and the v clamps in the tail pipe side. Sometimes the 3 bolts that hold the mount to the bracket sieze along with the 2 bolts that hold the muffler to the mount. Use copper antisieze on threads and bolts shafts that go through the sleeves when reassembling.

In reguard to the "flex" pipe in the muffler pic....that is the tiptronic muffler but the input and outputs r in the same spot ao it too will work.
