Default IMS

Don't hate me, I come to the 996 from years of 928 and recently a Cayman that has returned to southern Cali.
Now looking to purchase a low mileage '01 Turbo. I have the complete Porsche maint. history on this 22K car. 2 previous owners who treated it gently, mostly just oil and brake fluid changes. I drove it today and it sings.
My question(s) here are age related, me and the car. I am no longer a 'hands on' maint. guy. but I want to go into this with eyes wide open regarding any issues that might arise later on this Turbo, and it will not go to a dealer unless absolutely necessary, that is to say I have two shops in mind that this car will do to if necessary. And I know next to nothing about the 911. It has a timing chain so that should not be an issue on a 23 yo car with such low mileage -- correct?
And the only other issue to worry about is the IMS?

I know there must be IMS discussions here or in some thread. I just spent :30 skimming a search on a 400+ post thread and nothing. Can anyone link the short skinny on IMS or post pertinent info here, please?

There are no IMSB issues with the Turbo engine, you're good to go!

Porsche pulled out all the stops with the Mezger engines found in the 996 Turbo, GT2, and GT3. These cars are NOT prone to IMS bearing failure nor bore scoring that plague the 996 Carrera M96 engines. This is because Porsche chose to use an oil fed plain bearing to support both ends of the intermediate shaft and nikasil cylinder bores to prevent the onset of bore scoring. Not saying the turbo model is not going to need maintenance. These are still 20+ year old Porsches and they'll need some of the same things that wear out on other Porsche 911 cars, but IMS bearing failure and bore scoring is NOT among them.

Turbo's engine good for 300k plus miles without taking it apart. T2 a member here has 700k on his. Mine's almost 200k and has been great. Head over to the 996 Turbo forum and post an introduction.

Good choice, thats also my next Pcar. TT/Mezger pretty much solves all the worst issues of the 996.
Almost like the young water cooled engineers wanted to fix/up date all the problems of the m996,,, so they went old school Mezger

jmo

Thanks guys.
Years ago I surfed into a tech discussion on it and til now remembered only the high points. IMT I found the LN Engineering FAQs it. I know who sponsors this thread, so I’ll just say they show their bias. But still good to read.
and from credible posters here, I get Assurance.
