I am always hitting the rev limit when going from 1st to second 3 times out a 10 trys. Usually I try shifting at 6700 but shifting to third is easier to gadge. Though this I do less because I am doing over the speed limit by at least 20km. And can shift right into 4th or 5th by that time.

On the street about 4000. Merging onto a highway about 7000. On the track 8200 is fun.

Default Downshifting

Slight spin on the survey.

At what RPM do you let the engine drop to before downshifting?

And what is the lowest RPM you let the engine rev, especially in 2nd?

I rev match when down shifting. This means I bring the rpm up to what I the rpm will be in the new gear. When doing it to slow down I shift to the lower gear when I know it will be below 5000. When going for power I will do this when the I know the new gear will give me 4000 - 6000

And what is the lowest RPM you let the engine rev, especially in 2nd?

The rev limiter cuts the fuel on the way up through the RPM band, no damage should you hit it but not the best thing for the engine. However, there is nothing to prevent a mechanical over rev should you drop to a gear that is to short for the speed you are running, this often results in bent valves and damaged pistons... aka the "money shift". In other words, do not downshift to second at 90mph...

Both types of overrevs are recorded by the ECU.

I'm pretty sedate on the street. Upshift at about 3-3.5K rpm, and use up all 6 gears, cruise in 6th. I don't engine brake, I coast in whatever gear I happen to be in, push in the clutch just before the engine dies, then place it in first when I'm at a dead stop by the light. I rarely go back all the way down to first so long as the car is moving, prefer to stay in second unless the car almost comes to a dead stop or I'm going up a ramp/steep hill. I get about 22 MPG . I just wave at all the cars that rev and squeel their tires at me, smiling while I say "Fool".

The track is a different matter. I rarely go below 3.5 K rpm, blip and rev match every downshift keeping it in the power band never skipping a gear. I think hitting the rev limiter is a big no-no but upshift close to redline. I will occasionally short shift depending on the track and traffic. I don't even dare figure out MPG, but I have to gas up during lunch for fear of running out of gas before the end of the day.

Hey, Sloth. How about a race to see who makes 2000 posts first ? I can't outrun your GT3, but I may get you on this one.

Based on the fact that we are even on posts despite my 10 month lead, I am sure you will make 2000 before me. Not sure if that is a good thing or not though. Can anybody say obsessed, I know my wife can.
