Default Help with 01 911 Carrera 4 I just purchased

Hello everyone,

I just bought this beautiful 2001 yellow 911 but it needs alot of work to get her where she deserves to be. Right now shes running super rough, at times falling under 1k while idling. I plan on doing a full tune up ASAP. The brakes are also shot and also need a full service. Theres also the dash lighting up like an xmas tree. Im hoping the tune up and brake service correct the bulk of them. Anything else i should be looking at? Im concerned about the PSM off light, i couldnt switch it back on through the toggle button. Hoping i didnt get in over my head with this project. Give me some good news fellas. Lol. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

First beautiful car great luck with her
a full tuneup and a mass air flow sensor should help idle and possibly the check engine
go to a local Porsche meet and find a good tech through them

Congrats!
Don't do anything until you do a full diagnostic scan off the car. Note or print the output, then clear the codes, drive the car and see what comes back.
Throwing plugs and an air filter at this car isn't going to get you anywhere.
Good luck!

BTW, normal idle should be somewhere around 750 to 800 rpm. High idle and rough running could be a vacuum leak, pull your oil fill tube cap while engine running to see if anything changes as the oil fill tubes are notorious for vacuum leaks, particularly at the accordion section. Also, ensure the throttle body rubber sleeves which connect it to the intake plenums on each side are tight, there are 4 screw clamps, one on each side front and rear. You may want to consider a smoke test to positively identify vacuum leaks. Beauty car, I dig the color.

Yes, a full OBDII diagnostics would be the first thing. Let's see what codes you have.

Should we assume you didn't have a pre purchase inspection done before buying ? Hopefully you didn't buy someone else's headache . But everything can be fixed . Find a good local independent shop and start a relationship . Ask lots of questions here there are some smart folks on this forum .

Invest in a Durametric or make friends with someone who has a professional version. Best of luck.

Good advice. I'll definitely be doing this in the next couple of days. Thanks

Your assumptions are correct. I took my more mechanically inclined friend with me that helped verify all the electronics are good and some other basic stuff. But he's no Porsche specialist by any means. Im hoping i didnt buy a headache either, but also feel like i got a pretty good deal on a running version of the car. I drove it across town and made it home in 1 piece. Finding a good shop is definitely high on my to do list.

The cheapest Porsche 996 does not often remain the cheapest.

Fingers and toes crossed it doesn't turn into a money pit. agreed the $300 is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
