Default 10mm socket for connecting rod bearing cap bolts

This is probably a candidate for the Darwin awards category but ran into a small but rather annoying issue when removing pistons.
Workshop manual says "Remove twelve-edged socket wrench insert a/f 14 mm and connecting-rod bearing cap".

Well, that magic words there are "A/F 14mm." That A/F stands for "Across Flats" in metric system. Not sure if that is correct or not but those stock bolts are 12-sided 10mm bolts. Not sure if that A/F 14mm = 10mm in metric or what's going on here.

Well, I have two 10mm sockets - one in 1/4" and one in 3/8" . Turns out that 1/4" works ok but the 3/8 doesn't - it just doesn't fit. See the difference below where the 1/4" is on the left and 3/8" on the right.

That 3/8 socket on the picture works with 6-sided 10mm bolts but apparently not with 12-sided bolts even though it itself is 12-sided.
Crossing my fingers and bought this ->
Amazon Amazon
- same size bolts are also on the bearing carrier.

The 3/8 drive socket is not made properly. There are bent edges to every other tooth, should not be like that.

I agree - that is somehow a really weird design. I wonder what the purpose of those bent edges.

Moral story of that original post is look carefully what you buy. I bought that locally not paying attention to the details as I had that 1/4" but thought that 3/8" would be better for that.

Those sockets are both wrong. Those are E12 sockets. You want a 10mm 12pt socket. What you linked to at Amazon should work.

an e-torx socket would have a 6 pointed star. those are some funky sockets.

That's what I though as well that torx sockets have this "soft" six point figure where angles are like )( .

A guess - could the purpose of that weird design be on that 3/8 that it could work for both 10mm normal (6-sided only) and torx bolts. The hard edges supports normal 6-sided bolts and those bent edges are for torx bolts - just a guess based on the image - need to test this.

Hilarious. What difference are we talking about, like a couple of dollars?
Since I'm actively building my engine, based on the FSI assembly series, Jake recommends you invest in an impact grade 12-point deep socket since you'll be using it a lot. While I agree, it can also be said that if you're a DIY'er then it's a one and done scenario. Meaning you won't wear out the socket doing just one engine. A dozen? definitely. My point is I bought it anyway knowing that it doesn't cost much. Oh and if you're going with forged internals, the K1 APR bolts on the big ends are 11mm 12pt, not 10 like the stock ones. Be aware of that too.
