Thumbs up Blaupunkt DX-R70 1-DIN Sat Nav Installed...

I bought this unit from ebay for £300 and fitted it a few days back.
Here's a quick report after driving around with it for a couple of
hundred miles.

It's a Blaupunkt TravelPilot DX-R70 single DIN Sat Nav system
with built in CD and Radio. You can order it in silver or black.
In the UK, a new unit is about £700 but there seems to be plenty of
them on ebay. Just ensure you get the keycard with it.

The unit fits into the dash perfectly but it does protrude slightly.
I can live with that. The stock 996 CD/radio connector just plugs straight
into the back. No messing about. Even the speed pulse wire is there for
you in the connector! However, you have to connect and place the GPS
receiver head. Took me all of 20 minutes. Mostly because I removed the
dash pod to wire in the GPS receiver head just behind the flashing
alarm led. Once this is done you have to "install" the system by
driving around for 20 minutes whilst the unit calibrates itself.

I am truly impressed with this unit and it is incredibly accurate
and versatile. The built in 4x20W RMS power amp is excellent but
but wiring my iPod to the aux socket took some ingenious thought
(I mean I had to get my oscilloscope out!).
I also wired the external feed to my kicker power amp to power my base
tube. The sound is well, sufficient to say "loud but crisp and punchy".
But be aware that I had to order up two special cables from Blaupunkt
to wire my iPod and the external amp.

The unit doesn't show route maps (the screen isn't big enough) but it
does have directional indicators. Basically it works on the idea that
you should keep your eyes on the road rather than view a map while
driving (especially at speed ). Instead the "sexy lady" in the box
talks to you to give you directions while you drive, preempting
your every move. I like a dominant woman

The system also has Traffic Management Control (TMC) which will
reroute you around queued traffic head. CDs are available
for all US states and the whole of Europe down to house numbers!
You can also just punch in your post code (zip).

Seems to me that this is the cheapest option for an
after market sat nav.

Yeah, I know, my interior is a bit dirty but the flash
makes it look worse than it is.
