I am looking to purchase a 1999-2001 996. In these model years does the back seat room differ in size? I want to put a car seat in the rear for my 2 year old and I know theres plenty of room for that in the coupe. Is the cabriolet a different story?

The only difference in the cab is that the rear seat backs tilt forward a little to accommodate the soft top. If the car seat fits in the coupe you'll have no problem in the cab.

Porsche makes baby seats that fits back there...they are made by a company called Britax tho, and there version is less expensive, since there is no porsche logo. Do a search on 'Baby Seat' and I'm sure you'll find more info.

See this thread for a lot of discussion:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ht=infant+seat
(If that link doesn't work, search "infant seat" in this forum and it will get you to that thread).
Bottom line: If you want to use a seat in front, you must get the Porsche airbag deactivation bar installed and programmed. Otherwise, just for the back seat, just about any seat will do, though some will fit better than others. Britax makes the Porsche seats. I have the midsize Porsche seat made by Britax (bought a year ago - not the current model) and it is a tight fit in the back though it works, but I also have the option to put it in the front.

My 2 year old son loves to sit in the back seat in his Britax Marathon and yell Poooorsche!

If you have a 2-year old, as I do, you need a front-facing toddler seat. The Porsche branded one is over $450 and the Britax version is over $250. I bought an Evenflo Vanguard 5 seat in grey for around $70. I removed the plastic tilt block on the bottom of the seat (which allows you to tilt it back, but not on a 911) and it fits great in my 911 coupe.
My daughter really loves going for a ride in the Porsche so we use the car a lot more now. This is a basic seat, but the fit and fabric are just terrific. I did use the rear tether, which made for a very rigid installation. If you get a cabriolet, one trick you might use to make the seat fit better is to remove the rear seat backrest, which is easily done in about 10 minutes.

"Thanks. .... I remember reading removal of back seat somewhere...I assumed the back seat can be put back easily and without damage."
_______
Yes, you can remove the backrests and seat bottoms and put them back within about 15 minutes with no issues. I did this and then decided that the seat I have fit better with everything left in place.

I have the Britax Roundabout and it works great in the backseat (forward facing).

I have a forward facing toddler seat in the passenger side rear seat and a booster seat in the driver side rear seat. Both fit nicely and are perfectly functional.
The wind stop can be used (when no kids in the back seat) without removing the car seats. The horizontal portion of the windstop on the toddler seat side of the car rests on the top of the toddler seat. I have several hundred miles of highway speed travel with the top down and windstop installed as above with no problems.

The only other thing I would caution you on is that the seats in the rear of a cab will be ok for a child in a seat or an adult under ~5'5" but any biggerg and they are getting a crick in the neck.
I think in addition to the seats being tipped forward the bottom cushion is also higher and the roof line is less forgiving! This all make for a very snug ride with the top up. At 6'2" there is no way I can sit back there with the top up. nor can my 5'8" girlfriend.
