Helllo first time poster longtime viewer.....corny yes. Anyhow I'm in the market for a used 996 and I've been browsing E-bay and other sites and one question I do have is what causes a 996 to have the 911 badge on the engine cover versus Carrera. Thank you

there are 2 versions of the 996 that have the "911" badge on the back
one was released in 1999~ called the millenium edition
and there was one that was just released in 04 called the 40th anniversary.
the part is also availible to buy as a part from pcna... so dont let the badge alone determine if the car is a special edition.

I knew of the special editions but I saw examples on e-bay such as the one linked below that I assume aren't special editions.

If the case is that the only way to buy it is seperately from PCNA does it replace the Carrera emblem cleanly? The one in the picture looks good but it is only a picture and I like the 911 much better.

The deck lid badge is just 'glued' on (911 or Carrera). You can use dental floss or the like the remove the lettering, then some adhesive remover (that hopefully won't mess up the paint) to remove the glue. Some people just take them off and leave them off altogether.

Rather than adhesive remover try using a blow dryer to heat the tape residue and roll it up with your thumb. Then a little polish and wax to finish off the cleaning process.
