Question Thursday I pick up my 2001 996 Aero, should I be concerned?

I just put a deposit down on a 2001 996, 6 speed, Aero, with 18,000 miles at a local BMW dealer's used lot. previous owner trading her in for a BMW 760. The Porsche looks like it has been cared for and has a complete stainles steel exhaust system that I beleave is a FVD GT complete system. (Only a guess from looking under the Porsche and reference to online photos's). Sounds great! The 996 will be my weekend driver and not a daily.
Here's my only concern; I took the VIN to the local Porsche dealer that I was told did all the service and found out it had a complete new transmission and clutch done in March 2004. All the service had been up to date but it had been in 2 times with shifting issues, then the 3rd time had the complete trans and clucth replaced under warrenty. When I drive the Porsche all seems perfect. I did a carfax on it and all was clean. The factory warrenty runs out September 27, 2004. The price is $51,000 and most I have seen in this millage and condition have been in the low 60's, but had more warrenty time still. Should I be concerned?
Thanks Alan

If it has a brand new clutch & tranny, and warranty left to boot, why worry?
Price seems good too.

Doesn't Porsche warranty replacement parts for 2 years? If so, the tranny & clutch would have a longer warranty.

The price seems fair. If it had shifting problems then it was rebuilt I would not worry. They took apart the whole tranny and should have figured it out. Rebuilt parts should have at least 1 year warranty on top too, so don't worry. Most '01 in LA,CA goes for 50-55K for low mile ones. If yours has lots of options then the price is fair.

Some 996's sometimes had a problem with 2nd gear poping out into neutral, and a new tranny fixed the problem. Maybe that was it.

Thanks all, starting to feel better.

Does anyone know how long Porsche warranties the new transmission in this case?
ie, warranty transmission new march or 2003, original owner sells Porsche in April 2004 and factory warranty expires September 2004. Does the new transmission warranty go past September 2004 for a new owner?

Also would I be able to purchase an extended warranty and should I?

(hopefully soon I will have more fun topics)

Thanks Alan

Yes you can get an extended warranty, should you get one it will depend how much wil it cost. As far as the tranny extending beyond the manufacture warranty you will have to check with the dealer that did the work. My understanding porsche parts are warranty for 2 years, but I may be wrong.

Default more info

I went to the local Porsche dealer today and asked about the warranty replaced new transmission done this past March how long the new Porsche parts would be warranted for. I was told the factory warranty ends Sept. 2004 and the warranty replaced new transmission that was put in this March 2004 would also expire Sept. 2004 since it was done under factory warranty. Does this seem correct? Thanks Alan

alan,
if you are buying this car from a P-car dealer ask them to certify the car for you should. Should only add a few k to price of the car, like $2500, and then you have an additional 2 years or up to 100k miles of FACTORY warranty. Definitely worth the price, especially is she starts leaking (RMS).
As far as the replacement of tranny and clutch, I wouldn't worry about it, RobynC on this board had her tranny replaced and her car is an 03... Since it was done by the dealer it shouldn't cause you a headache.
