I bought a replacement ignition switch for the 996. Part #4B0905849B
the new IGNITION switch has the part where the male part of the ignition goes into clocked 90 degrees in one direction in comparison to the stock Porsche/Audi switch.
has anyone else run into this before? I can’t get it to work. There is no way to rotate the housing where it mounts into.
so confused.

Porsche updated the lock mechanism - the cast metal part - to a new design, and some cars have the new one at random. The new design takes a 4B0 905 849 ignition switch.
You must have the older version of the mechanism. It takes a 4A0 905 849 B ignition switch.
The two switches aren't interchangeable.

Hi guys, our application data matches what Theprf said: 4A0 905 849 B (black) is the "early style" and 4B0 905 849 (white) is the "late style". For 1999-2003 911, the car could have been built with either version switch, so the owner must check to see which they have prior to ordering a replacement.

URO - good to see your support here. I deleted my previous comments, which were a joke of course.
If you are near an Audi dealer, you can get the part there. I ordered the URO, kept it as a spare and got the one at Audi which is the exact Porsche part.

I think part number
Audi part # 4A0 905 849 B
correct
i will not that changing the switch didn’t do anything to help the firmness required to turn the key.
