Default where to buy parts for oil change...

Ready to do my first oil change... where should I buy the Aluminum Sealing Ring?

Is that something autozone would have?

Oil could be bought any where. The filter and sealing ring must be obtained froma import auto store, you can get it at the dealer, or buy mail order. Vertex is in FL has good prices close enough to you. The ring is included in many filter kits.

I'm looking to do the same thing, so I'll be interested to track the responses to this post.

Also, does anyone know where to get the wrench "attachment" for the removing the oil filter? In articles I've read, people have said its under $10 (part #000 721 920 40) but my dealer wants $35 and doesn't have it in stock. Anyone know a good place to get this part?

Ended up going to the dealer... $25 for filter and $.50 for ring.
Oil at a local parts store.
Wrench attachment NOT NEEDED.

Oil change was easy.

Default oil change

just did the oil/filter in my 99 996 for the first time myself. very easy. the dealer wanted $250 for a "minor service" bologna!!!
I spent $5 at sears on the 8mm socket, then since i buy a lot of little stuff at the dealer, i asked for a wholesale account. they said sure!!
the filter insert cost $15, the aluminum seal was included, the 9 quarts of 0/40 mobil 1 ( which you can only get from a porsche dealer) cost $47.
the only trouble i had was getting the darn filter cover off. tried 3 different tools and finally got it with a $5 strap wrench.
total cost..$72!!!
ps-have a big pan to collect the old oil...it come out quick!!!
good luck.

If you didn't use the wrench attachement, what did you use on the filter? I can see something like a strap wrench being useful to get it off, but did it feel secure and solid when putting the filter cover back in place with a strap wrench (just doesn't seem like you could get a lot of torque with that?

FWIW - I paid $4.99 per quart for 0-40 at Autozone - same stuff that Porsche dealers say is "only available though Porsche."

I used a giant plumber's wrench to loosen it and hand tightened on the way back on... I hear that the service guys just hand tighten it.

Some Wal-Mart stores in the NY/NJ area also carry 0-40 Mobil One.

Thumbs up

i second the tip on the strap wrench - exactly what I use.

when putting the filter back in I just hand tighten and then give it a little twist with the strap wrench just to be sure. you really want to be careful with it though as the housing is only plastic - want it tight enough so it won't back out on it's own (having the filter housing come off while driving would be a drag for sure!!!) but don't want to crack it either.....

I bought the filter wrench attchment at Handsontools.com . I bought it online but they had it in the mail the same day and I received it within 2 days. They're located in GA. It works very well compared to the stamped metal ones you get at the discount parts stores. If you do get one from the parts store, you need a 74mm wrench. I think it is the same for VW's and maybe Audi's.
