Ciao,

correct somewhat... a hall sensor is nothing more than a proximity sensor (eg: pulses a signal when a tooth of a cog passes by it. The DME then calculates RPM based on the frequency of the pulses.)

But, I think it is used to sense the position of the variocam.

It still startles me as well...I'm surprised the change is so pronounced it's almost as if there's a little turbo in there!

Check in the front compartment, that's where 944 turbos have theirs!

You'd think I had one... one of the most common questions I get about the car is: "Is that a 911 turbo?"

One time I got this question posed to me.

Other Guy: Is that a 911 or a Carrera?

Me: Uhmmm... YES!

Other Guy: HUH???

So I had to explain that all Carreras are 911 but not all 911s are Carreras. Turbo, GT3, Carrera S etc. The other guy's brow wrinkled and he had the "deer in the headlights" look on his face.

Other Guy: Uhmmm.... anyway.... nice looking car!

I have not noticed the bump at 3200. Am I missing something?

When I bought mine, it hadn't been driven in the 4 months prior.
I noticed a marked hesitation around that RPM when I first started to drive it and even posted here on it. Once I switched to 94 Octane and the DME learned my driving pattern, that momentary lag is completely gone.
Steady acceleration up to variocam kick in and then that really fun buzz up to redline!!

mine does not hesitate at 3200 RPM at all - just pulls like a freight train to the rev limiter. Maybe my car is afu

Yeah, it must be pretty annoying when there's an issue so pronounced that every new owner feels the need to post an, "am I nuts or is my car doing something weird" thread about it for FIVE YEARS.

Must need to resurrect that thread from 2004 detailing how the aftermarket tuners tweaked the fuel and timing at the changeover to smooth over the surge.

It's fun when you're "on it" but incredibly irritating when you're planning a part-throttle shift at 3500 and it surges just before you shift and your passenger (wife) says, "so, just learning stick shift are you?" Or when you're slightly more aggressive and upshifting at 4500 and you come down just before the surge and say WTF did I do?
