I've bought used BMW wheels before and had curb rash repaired and the wheels powder coated.
When I got them back you couldn't tell they weren't brand new.
I have a set of used 996 17" wheels that I plan or repairing some(a lot actually) curb rash and repainting myself.

I've been putting it off because I need to get the ancient tires removed and would like to do that before refinishing them.

When you say "repair" I gather you're referring to refinishing, not fixing a bent wheel.

I’ve used aluminum-filled body filler to good effect, see
Amazon Amazon
. When sanded down with fine grit, looks like aluminum, paint optional.
