Default Mystery SOLVED !

Since I bought my 996 I've wondered why there are two LED looking bulbs on either side of the classic cassette storage in the center stack cause I've never seen another with them

I also wondered why one of my button blanks had a hole drilled in it

Well today I figured it out inadvertently while installing an eBay short shifter (great feeling and v good for $50 imo and very easy to do!)
When I was putting the carpet back behind the console I felt a **** (hey not that type of ****!) So I turned it and nothing happened but it had 3 positions. And it had a nub sticking out like a rheostat.

Thought nothing of it then when I turned the key to on a bunch of beeps and gongs went off and the LEDs next to the cassette holder started blinking and I could see a green led in the hole.

I've attached some pics. I doubt it's effective in this day and age but I was never aware it was there !
I have no idea where it is mounted nor where the sensor is !

I have blue LEDs drilled into blanks on either side of the console as part of front/rear facing radar detector set up. It also flashes and makes noises when ignition is turned. Just a guess.

Post a video with the beeps.
Maybe someone can identify the brand.
It’s probably better than nothing...unless it goes off constantly due to all the collision warning systems these days.

Oh good idea!

I had it activated on my way home tonight from my friends and it went off when I passed various businesses (perhaps the auto open doors or the security systems ?)
I passed a few police and apparently now they only hit the radar gun when you pass them but it went off!

That is a K40-2000/2000P UNDETECTABLE hidden radar detector. I solved that same mystery after about a month of ownership when I went to the local Porsche dealership and they told me the beeps and noises were not Porsche sounds. I found my City/Highway/Off **** under the dash by the fusebox.

my set up is a K40 as well. The K band that automatic doors at groceries etc have will set it off in certain modes, but police radar is usually KA band. My set up also has an audio feature that announces which type of radar band is being detected and has a remote control which allows the system to be tweaked by the user. It's a great system and when working properly is a life saver for "spirited" driving

OHHHH maybe that's what the three settings are !
I'll take a video later on both settings.
It seems the middle position on the **** is "off"

Correct. And the rheostat is the volume for the notices.

K40 here too. The volume adjustment and band selector were mounted below the tray. The thing scared the crap out of me the first time it went off. I didn't know what was happening and though my car was going to blow up!
