does something like this exist for the 996?

 

Nothing exists today, specifically for a 996, that I'm aware of. I'm looking into an Android based unit and adding a CAN bus interface to control the HVAC stuff. Haven't spent much time on this yet, but it appears all of the hardwire exists out there - just need to integrate it.

Probably not. I've read a few things that said you lose the ability to control your HVAC when you replace a factory head unit that has those controls with an aftermarket. Try talking to CAI and Crutchfield. I think they would know for sure:
