Replace Clutch While Doing IMS Solution?
My new-to-me 996 C4S is currently taken apart at an indy in Ann Arbor. Was just going to have the IMS Solution installed, but they are now suggesting I get the clutch and flywheel replaced while they are in there (after they had a look at it). They said "the clutch has a little bit of life left but not much. all components have some pretty bad heat checking".
The car has 56,000 miles on it. I would be stupid to not replace those while they are in there, right?

Yes. I recently replaced the IMS bearing on my new-2-me '01 C2 cab with 54,000 miles. The IMS job involves removing the transmission, so the clutch is exposed. Then, it's an easy job to remove the clutch pressure plate and the clutch disc as long as the tranny is out, then inspect the flywheel to make sure it's good. My clutch was only about 50% worn but it made sense to replace the pressure plate and the disc at that time. Replacing the clutch later would mean dropping the tranny again, which is a lot of work. I didn't want to do it all again! Also, while I was in there, I replaced the rear main seal, RMS, which is cheap and easy now, but expensive and tough later. Didn't your shop suggest the RMS also?

32k miles IMS installed.
At 1500 mi per year and a lightly used clutch i opted not to replace clutch
Cleaned it all up, new RMS and bearings and back in she went
OEM clutch was expensive and with lightly worn plate and near new flywheel showing very little wear I passed
After she is apart ask your shop to give you an opinion
Alot has to do with miles, how it was driven and what it all looks like once apart
Good luck

Yes and make sure the flywheel isn’t warped, hotspotted, and the return deflection is within spec. You’re already going to be knee deep in labor costs, you just as well rip the bandaid off.

My clutch was replaced when the IMS Solution was installed at 33,000 miles.
I now have 79,000.
I wonder how long until I need to replace it again.

In order to replace the IMS you have to remove the clutch and flywheel, replacing these new should have zero labor cost to you. Also you should not have to pay additionally for the flywheel or clutch bolts, the cost of these should had been included in the original estimate. The biggest cost of replacing the clutch/flywheel is labor, and in this case you already have that cover. Go ahead and replace them, also do the RMS also, is no big deal to do.

AOS also much easier to replace with transmission already removed.

Three Wheelin'
Another vote to replace, mine had 52k miles. No charge except for the clutch.

To expand, when I had the IMS Solution installed on my 45000 mile 2003, I opted to replace:
IMS
RMS
Clutch
Flywheel
AOS
Water Pump
This was in November 2018, right after I purchased the vehicle.
