Default Cabrio Interior Cover

In re. part # 996-555-083-04 Interior Cover (aka Top Cover), this trim piece is about three feet left-to-right and about 7 inches wide, and covers the space above the stored folding top and the body. This is the trim piece that has the
little round plactic snap-in pieces that cover over the lock mechanisms. Phew Now here's my question, guys. Is installation of this trim piece essentially a snap-in job, and removal of the old one is simply a case of gently prying it up?

I think that you are talking about the roll bar cover. That attaches with four screws - if you have an early production car two of the screws are behind the carpet, behind the rear seat backs. If you have a later car, two of the the screws are under the oval pieces that cover the roll hoops. Those oval covers do pop off with a trim tool - they are hinged so only one side pops up - front I think (writing from memory). Once you remove those screws you have two more behind the gray material that covers the top well - you access by putting the top in the service position and undoing the top cables from the retainers on each side. You will see plastic covers where the screws are. Once all the screws are removed the roll bar cover lifts off. I replaced mine about a year ago with a used one. There are a couple of write-ups on here with pictures.
