Default 996 Engine Failure

I have 1998 C2 996 that has covered only 46k miles and has a full dealer service history. After taking it to my dealer for a major service I noticed oil in the expansion tank.

The dealer took the car back and said they had traced it to a faulty Oil Separator. They replaced the item, put a detergent in the coolant and told me to drive it for a few hundred miles. They then were planning to take the car back and change the coolant.

About 1000miles later the car blew a coolant hose because of the volume of emulsified oil in the cooling system. Clearly the dealer had not solved the problem. The dealer has now stripped the engine and is claiming that it needs replaced (at a £13k cost!). The cause, apparantly is a crack in the cylinder liners (2!).

If anyone has experienced this problem or has heard of similar issues it would be good to hear from you.

I take it PUK have offered to compensate you by offering a greatly reduced priced engine (i.e., something like 50% off). They did that with me on a gearbox. I still have not taken them up on it as I have to fork out £3.300 which ain't easy to part with. They think it's a fair deal but on an £80k car I think it stinks. To top it off my RMS has gone for its 3rd time since November last year. I have a feeling they will say it needs a new engine this time around. Who will pay for it is yet to be defined. And I have had this car since new!

I read someone posted that noone has yet had to pay for a new engine through faulty design in the 996: In your case "faulty oil separator" in mine RMS.

Now you know why I wouldn't buy a 997.

US Retail price on a new 3.4 liter engine (no exchange) is $20,172.33 plus installation cost. In the US Porsche does sell exchange engines at a much lower cost - about $7,000 (US),

I've checked with a local dealer here in PA, USA.

The $6,200 price is a re-manufactured engine not for a new engine.

Yeah guys think about this. A new C4S here in the UK is £68,000 and that's basic no extras. That's $125,800.00 at this exchange rate.

Outrageous springs to mind!

I think everything in the UK costs the same here in Pounds as the exact product does in dollars in the US- not to take this off topic
