Default Search is your friend!

I hate when people post this. Absolutely the stupidest thing you can say. To me that means one of two things.
1 One you don’t know the answer so shut up
2 It’s someone new who might be bring up a new thread put in different words. This helps many of us.

I use search also and sometimes 300 different posts show up. Who has time? Maybe if you work in an office and you screw around all day of forums but not me. I am a contractor. I don’t have time to sort through 300 posts to find the answers to a question someone might know off the top of there head.
Search can also be your frustrating enemy.
And if you don’t like what I have to say GOOD because I want to **** you off.

I bet most derogatory things that are said in computer forums would never be said face to face. A computer can make a man boy act like he has a set of *****. Why not be nice and act like a gentleman. Help people out. After all we are here for one reason. We like our cars.

I agree with this, but only to a point. In the situation described above, a response of “search is your friend” is annoying and certainly not helpful. However, it’s equally annoying to see a “new to Porsche, new to 996, anything I should know about?” thread. In that case, no response at all is better than “search is your friend”.

I agree as well. I'm new to Rennlist and to Porsche. I've been on Internet forums since usenet newsgroups were popular (OK, they never really were "popular") so I usually know what I'm doing. The search function leaves a lot to be desired and there are no real FAQs. I have decent luck when I go to advanced search and search by title only.

After I read a post when searching, I keep clicking on the "back to forum" or the direct link to the forum thinking it will land me back in my search results. Nope, my search is cleared out and I have to start over. I haven't seen a "back to results" button. I guess you just need to use the browser's back button. That's what I've been doing.

Are you able to search with quotes so you can find a phrase and not just individual words? Also, can you use the minus sign like in google to not search certain words?

And if you don't read previous posts & start a new one the next time 301 will show up. When I read a new thread post I read enough of it to see if it has a unique question, if not SEARCH.

Lighten up Francis. Lately we've had multiple members starting new threads on the exact same topic on the same day or the next day. There are very few questions about these cars that haven't been asked and answered previously. Search is indeed your friend. If you don't like the Rennlist search function, try Google Advanced search: https://www.google.com/advanced_search or preface your Google search string with "site:rennlist.com"

I don't think your "I'm too busy because I'm a contractor" defense holds up.

Yep. Doing a Google search on a 996 issue almost always takes you straight to a Rennlist thread that’s bang on the money. Doing a search on Rennlist usually doesn’t. Weird.

When I see another “IMSB”, “Buying a 996. What should I look out for” or “What oil do you use” thread I’m

Use the browser's back button.

These threads have a lot of information that you would find in a FAQ:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ssues-etc.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...96-thread.html

Use Google to search the site if you're not happy with the results.

Sometimes people just want their OWN thread.. I'm totally okay with that. Sometimes new stuff comes up / out.

If members aren't the ones paying for "band width", then WTF does it matter to them if someone ask the same basic questions again in their own thread.

OP you should get off the computer and go for a long jog in the park. This kind of irrational anger is not good for your health. Your blood pressure must be high 🙄Some of the short and long-term health problems that have been linked to unmanaged anger include:
  • headache
  • digestion problems, such as abdominal pain
  • insomnia
  • increased anxiety
  • depression
  • high blood pressure
  • skin problems, such as eczema
  • heart attack
  • stroke.

On one hand, the op is an entitled snowflake with ridiculous expectations on how a technical forum 'traditionaly' operates.

on the other, too many threads go sideways 3-4 posts in on here, become diluted, does it really make a difference? I click on a Raby video review thread, and get a discussion on left handed monkey wrenches....

I don't always see eye to eye with Jake Raby on Here, but have great respect for his technical contributions. Stuff like His comment on engine mounts was very insightful, which keeps me coming back. It just takes wading through the minutia to find it. So yes, searching isnt what it use to be.

I do use the back button. I even mentioned that in my post. I won't go into why that's usually not a good thing to do on modern web interfaces.

I've already read those FAQs.

The suggestion by the other guy on how to search rennlist with Google is a good one. I'm going to try that.

I was thinking of starting an IMSB thread, or a Tiptronic thread. Ok?
