Default "Grease" on magnetic oil plug and metal shavings in oil filter

Hi,

I changed oil today on my 1999 C2 Cab with about 100k miles and found something that looks like thick grease on the magnetic oil plug and metalic parts in the filter. Can't tell if it's magnetic "sludge". or something else.

It's more gray than the picture shows:

Also found these items in oil filter. Left is mostlikely something magnetic, middle and right is some type of plastic.

Last oil change I think I saw some of the brown pieces (chain guides?).

Previous owner replaced with LN IMS.
Also has LN thermostat, recent oil pump, no codes, frequent oil changes, no other issues.

Any comments on what it might be and how to proceed?

(Just rebuild the gearbox and fixed the convertible top and and a bunch of other things. So this sucks *****).

Any codes? Looks like a chain guide is deteriorating and allowing chain to metal contact?

Get a UOA done!
The paste on the plug is normal.

No codes. But did have had a P1530 once.
Is there any other way to diagnose?

The paste is a fine metal from normal wear and tear.

I would drop the pan (sump cover) and take a look. Not a hard job. There is no gasket, but you will need a small tube of sealant to put a thin (very thin!) bead of sealant when installing. I dropped mine to install the two quart deep sump and found a few pieces of chain guide. I will be dropping the engine soon for maintenance and I will replace the chain guides that can be replaced (the IMS chain guide requires major disassembly). This is what mine looked like. You can see the pieces of chain guide.

You can also see that the person who installed the X51 baffle prior to my ownership used too much sealant on the sump cover. It squished out way past the edge. I found two pieces of salastic on the oil pick up tube screen. A big no no.

I agree I think dropping the pan is good insurance to catch anything before it becomes catastrophic. It could be from numerous things looks possibly like guide wear and some chain slap into a metal surface possibly.. is it making any engine noise?
