I opted to go this route when my LN IMS was ending its service life. I decided I was going to install The Solution and then I got thinking what I really wanted, an engine with both more power and reliability and the Track Performer engine was the perfect recipe I was looking for.

I will keep this thread updated as I get updates from the good people at FSI.
I'm jealous! Good luck with the project. Can't wait to hear your impressions once the work has been finished.

Question: Which BBS wheels are you running?

And...to those of you with a '99 3.8 conversion...what's involved? I thought the 3.4 could only be bumped to 3.6?

3.4 to 3.8 is (and I stand to be corrected by the experts actually DOING the work) the standard for the Track Performer (Stage II). The 3.6 is for the Performer (Stage I). I asked about a 4.0 upgrade and the case is too small for those bores and the other difference between the '99 and others is the cable throttle - no 'plug and play' ECU tunes with the available computer.

Ahh, gotcha. Okay, that makes sense. How do you deal with the ECU tuning on the '99?

There is no ECU tune available from FSI for the 1999 C2 that I am aware of. The increase in power and torque comes strictly from the engine modifications. The 1999 C4 has the electronic throttle body so there may be an ECU tune available.

^^ This is correct. I've got a '99 C4 - ECU Tune available (drive by wire accelerator/TB)... '99 C2 = Cable throttle no ECU tune available

Is a tune required for these modifications with the '99 C2?

When I did a 3.8 in my 99 Boxster, I used the 3.4 RoW tune, pushed to the ECU using a PIWIS I. Never had an issue with it adapting. We always recommend fitting new MAF, primary o2, and all sensors that can affect tune and operation.

I encourage you to really drill down on the QC involved in matching pistons to rings to sleeves. For example, try to discover if your supplier offers "regular" rings versus "custom fit" rings and, if so, ask yourself why that would be the case...
Please elaborate on this.

When I was discussing this with Jake last fall, he asked what I was looking for and we also discussed my budget. We both agreed the 3.8 Track Performer was the recipe for success, in my case.
