Old tyres for a track day

It is stupid to take a known bad part to the track, tires or anything else. The potential to ruin your day or the day of your fellow track mates is way too high. Why risk it???

I know that. My comment was an attempt to invoke some thought...You know, common sense stuff!

Burning Brakes
I noticed a hair line crack in one of my wheels during a track day last year. I had my original set of wheels and tires in my truck (I trailer my 996 in case I break it, so I have a ride home) so I swapped them out. The original set had tires that were about 6 years old. Since I was running in the beginner group, I was not pushing them too hard. Still, I dove into one of the turns (turn 7 at Road Atlanta) too early and I tried to keep it on the track at the exit (should have run off into the grass) and spun out of the turn. I got lucky and I didn't hit anything. The 6 year old tires were noticably harder than the new ones. I wonder if I would have spun if I had the new tires on. Maybe not. Running off on the grass is still the right thing to do though, in that situation.
