Default Fell into the 996 ownership pool yesterday!

Hello 996 forum. Being on my second 928, first a GTS 5-speed and now a 1978 5-speed it's needles to say I haven't spent much time here. That said I have come to like the 996 model for several years now but was playing my usual strategy of waiting for the cars I like to blow up in price before getting in. Last weekend I saw one for sale at a local specialty dealer and went to have a look. What I found was a 1999 Carrera 4, Arctic silver over black leather, 19,9XX miles (yes less than 1K a year), with recent receipts for IMS, RMS, air separator, mass air sensor, camshaft covers reseal, valve cover gaskets R&R, new shocks, 4 new Michelin Pilot Sports, plus several $K of other miscellaneous niggles fixed at an indy shop. I was worried the low miles would be something to hand wring over but hell it's only the price of a honda Accord so it's now mine. The options are:

C02 ?

030 Sports Suspension

236 Internal production number?

413 18" 993 Turbo-look wheels (not hollow spoke)

424 CD Compartment

580 Non-smoker package

698 CD-radio Becker Porsche CDR-32

936 Leather rear seats

981 Leather dashboard and door panels

983 Leather front seats

$$$ so far many smiles!

Congratulations! Sounds like a great find. Enjoy.

But, valve cover gaskets r&r? Hmm, something sounds fishy there. The valve covers on the 996 are mated to the head with a thin bead of sealant.

Interesting, the receipts show owner number 2 paid Action Motorsports of Vista, CA $840 for "VALVE COVER GASKET - Remove & Replace - Both" That shop is ironically right near my house maybe I'll go ask them about it. Perhaps the computer software they use only has this phrase and not valve cover sealant?

"camshaft covers reseal, valve cover gaskets R&R,"

Camshaft cover is the same as the valve cover... And yeah - no valve cover gaskets on the M96...Looks like someone is playing fast and loose with parts descriptions in order to pad the bill...

Or maybe they just entered it into the system wrong. No need to jump to the worst possible conclusion.

Beautiful car by the way! Enjoy it!

They probably replaced the spark plug tubes/O rings and marked it down as a valve cover gasket. Interesting that the IMS bearing was replaced. Wonder what they've replaced it with. The stock dual row units are very robust.

The paperwork says L&N, my guess is proactive.

Congrats. Welcome to the 996/928 club. Mine is also a '99 C4, albeit with 100k more miles than yours has. I've had it for 2 years. Both are great cars.

Yes, congrats from a fellow 928 and 996 owner as well!

Mine is also Arctic Silver and purchased July 2015 with just 7k miles.

As mentioned, both are great cars!

Enjoy!

Congrats, looks like a great deal.
I think Bill has to be the most common name in this forum!

LN makes at least 2 different bearings that fit the early 996 engines. One is half the price of the other. If the bearing kit was around $800USD then it's hybring bearing if it's $1500 then it's the "Solution".
