I have the K-40 in my BMW and Escort's version (radar/laser combo) in my Pcar.
I prefer the Escort. Both installations are super stealthy but the escort display is better and easier to mute (big plus for city driving)

Motor trend had good things to say about the K40 and the V1 does nothing to block laser.
My lexus has the remote K40, it rarely has any false + and has yet to let me down.
my concern is not which radar detecter to get, but rather whether the installation process itself is anything to worry about

I thought that the K40 unit was going to be updated pretty soon, although I may be getting confused with another company. Whatever you do decide to get make sure you have a V1 for early and directional warnings!! just as good if not better than the passport 8500 AND you get the arrows. For those of you that are saying the K40 is reliable - what do cops do when they see you zooming by at 90 and their guns say 20?

actually the independent people who have run the tests on the K40 say's that it is not worth the money at all, check out radartest.com, any magazine that has a radar promotion in it is going to say that radar detector is good, otherwise they would loose that money

Anecodotal evidence: Yesterday, driving on Route 3 in Boston, running both my Valentine One and K40 in my 996, Valentine One warned of radar a full mile before the K40 chirped. (Trooper on shoulder aiming the gun forward). Probably got enough warning from the K40 to slow down in time, but nearly as much warning as the Valentine gave me. Even more interesting, the K40 stopped warning about 3 seconds after I passed the trooper, the Valentine showed the radar behind arrow for another two minutes. The K40 was dealer-installed by the previous owner of the car; it has the laser defuser thing on the front bumper, which is the only reason I didn't remove it from the car.

I second what vjd3 says.
I have had a chance to run with a K40 and a V1 at the same time in the same vehicle. Not only did the V1 give me about 50 - 100% better distance (depending on the circumstances) but it often warned me of off-axis Superwideband Ka when the K40 remained silent. My K40 now remains turned off!
I have no experience with the 8500 but I have heard it is supposed to be very good. A friend of mine just purchased one and so far he likes it alot
.
Just my 2 cents.

mal28, These guys are right! I "inherited" a K-40 in my car and it's not very good. I tested it against my Passport Solo II and the k-40 loses by a mile. And, the Solo II isn't as good as a V1 or Passport 8500. Buy a V1 and spend the rest on some nice options. Otherwise, you're just driving down the road throwing money out the window.

I have both. V-1 in Benz, K40 remote in Porsche.
Set it up with the LEDs just below the instrument cluster, and they won't need to drill. On/Off/Hwy/City **** can go under the steering column down low, near your left knee.
I have only the red LEDs, and it's all I need, along with the chirps. Laser defuser is placed in front bumper area out of sight.
