Default Diagnose Engine

I have bought a new engine (a used engine) for my 996 C2 2002 since my old engine has crashed and is not possible to rebuild (one connecting rod pinched the crankshaft). I have the engine outside my car and I want to check if the engine is OK before I install it in my car.

Is it possible to check if the engine is OK without installing the engine or tear it down? I am thinking compression test and oil analysis. Is that enough?

It’s going to be tough without running it. Sure you can do an oil analysis, but unless it came with the original oil in it (don’t they usually ship engines empty of fluids?) it’s not going to tell you much. I suppose you can do compression by hand cranking. Only crank clockwise...

You can do a leak-down test, or hook up battery power direct to the starter with flywheel installed and do a compression test also.

Hopefully I am going to get more info soon (it has been refurbished some years ago but I don't know what year yet), but the engine has been used for some racing series for a couple of years.

I would say take the plugs out and bore scope it , probably best , I've heard of damaged engines with scores cylinders passing compression and leak down tests, I'm sure Jake has mentioned that before, also remove the sump and bore scope from underneath, I bought a used engine and for it shipped directly to my indie for inspection before I handed over the cash , I just agreed to pay for the guys time to bring the engine over £200 , in case problems showed up, good way to have a bit of comeback on a used motor and not just get stuck with another knackered engine!
